THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Savannah.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

A first day through the historic core

East Bay Street → Oglethorpe Square → downtown lunch → Bull Street squares → Forsyth → hotel

  1. Breakfast at B. Matthews

Allow 60 minutes, then walk 15–20 minutes toward Oglethorpe Square with a pause on the way.

    Check current official details ↗
  2. Join the Owens-Thomas opening queue

Current opening is 10:00 on operating days. Obtain the actual tour time onsite and let it control the morning; buying admission ahead does not secure a slot. Monday: use the squares circuit and move the house visit to Day 2.

    Check current official details ↗
  3. Lunch at B. Matthews

Allow a 15–20 minute walk and 75 minutes for the meal. If the assigned house tour overlaps, take an earlier lunch before the tour and shorten the later square walk.

    Check current official details ↗
  4. Walk the central squares

Take Chippewa, Madison and nearby streets at a slow pace, allowing about 75 minutes with sitting breaks.

    Check current official details ↗
  5. Forsyth Park pause

Allow 15–20 minutes from the southern squares and spend 45–60 minutes near the fountain and park paths. In heat or lightning, shorten this and take a ride to the hotel.

    Check current official details ↗
  6. Check-in and rest

Leave a proper hotel break. Use a 15–30 minute local ride if the walk back would be tiring.

  7. Dinner at The Olde Pink House

Reserve a table and allow 20–30 minutes to reach Reynolds Square. The published daily dinner service makes this suitable for the standalone first day.

02
Day 2

Art and church-led history

Telfair Square → East Bay lunch → Franklin Square → Jepson → hotel

  1. Breakfast at your lodging

Allow a full breakfast and 20–30 minutes to reach Telfair Square.

  2. Telfair Academy

Spend about 45–50 minutes in selected galleries, leaving time to reach lunch. Monday: replace this with the public square circuit and keep the church visit; move the museum to another day.

  3. Early reserved lunch at B. Matthews

Allow 15–20 minutes from the museum and 60 minutes for lunch. Tell the restaurant you need to leave by 12:15 for a 13:00 church tour.

  4. Check in at First African Baptist Church

Allow 20–25 minutes on foot from East Bay Street or a short ride, then check in before the 13:00 tour. Current tours run Monday–Saturday; Sunday or a church-event cancellation: use the exterior and allow more Jepson time.

  5. Jepson Center

Walk 10–15 minutes and allow about two hours for selected galleries. If Day 1’s house tour was missed, use the actual available Owens-Thomas slot instead; do not squeeze in both. All Telfair sites currently close Monday; use an unhurried square walk or hotel rest for this afternoon instead.

  6. Return and rest

Allow 15–30 minutes back to a central hotel. Days 1–2 make a workable weekend, with Sunday’s church interior replaced as described.

  7. Dinner at The Grey

Reserve Tuesday–Sunday, allowing 20–30 minutes to reach the MLK Boulevard address. Monday fallback: a confirmed Olde Pink House dinner; do not assume The Grey opens.

Day 3

Community history beyond the squares

Hotel → Pin Point → downtown lunch → Bonaventure → hotel → Thomas Square

  1. Breakfast at your lodging

Finish by 08:45 and bring water. Place this day Thursday–Saturday when possible.

  2. Drive to Pin Point

Allow 30–45 minutes from a central hotel plus 15 minutes for check-in. Confirm the 10:00 guided departure; the museum normally opens Thursday–Saturday.

  3. Pin Point Heritage Museum

Allow about 90 minutes with the host and exhibits. On a closed day, move this whole outing or visit Bonaventure at 10:00 and use Forsyth after lunch instead.

  4. Lunch at B. Matthews

Allow 35–50 minutes back to downtown after leaving around 11:30; spend 75 minutes over lunch. The daily lunch calendar supports the closed-day alternative too.

  5. Transfer to Bonaventure

Allow 20–35 minutes by car plus time to orient yourself; arrange the return before leaving the vehicle.

  6. A measured cemetery visit

Walk for about 75 minutes, leaving well before the 17:00 gates close. Use a map or a confirmed guide; the historical society’s free tours are not daily. Omit this second visit if used as the morning fallback.

  7. Return to the hotel

Allow 20–35 minutes and rest before dinner. Cancel exposed walking during lightning and substitute an operating Telfair gallery if the calendar permits.

  8. Dinner at Common Thread

Allow 20–30 minutes to 122 East 37th Street. Reserve Wednesday–Sunday; Monday/Tuesday require direct confirmation because published calendars conflict, otherwise use a confirmed Olde Pink House table.

Day 4

An island day without a second distant excursion

Hotel → Tybee north end → lighthouse → lunch → beach → Savannah

  1. Breakfast at your lodging

Eat before departure and pack water, sun protection and a change of clothing.

  2. Leave for Tybee

Budget 45–75 minutes for the road plus 15 minutes to park and enter. Busy beach weekends can take longer; no timed downtown appointment follows.

    Check current official details ↗
  3. Tybee lighthouse and museum

Allow 90 minutes. Buy tickets onsite; the lighthouse closes Tuesday and may suspend climbs for weather. On Tuesday, move the day or use the beach only if conditions suit; a tower climb is not step-free.

    Check current official details ↗
  4. Lunch at North Beach Bar and Grill

Move out of the lighthouse’s time-limited parking if necessary and allow 75–90 minutes for lunch at nearby 33 Meddin Drive. Published service starts at noon.

    Check current official details ↗
  5. North beach time

Allow an hour for a shore walk or supervised swimming only under suitable local conditions. Stay away from unsafe currents, follow posted rules and leave the water for thunder.

  6. Return to Savannah

Allow 60–90 minutes including traffic and parking, then protect the hotel rest/change period. In poor weather replace the island day with an operating museum day.

  7. Dinner at Crystal Beer Parlor

Allow 20–30 minutes to Jones Street and some first-come seating time. Tuesday–Sunday service fits; Monday use a reserved Olde Pink House table instead.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
