ATLAS MASTER DESTINATION

SavannahUnited States

Savannah is best understood at walking speed, with its shaded squares connected to serious interpretation of slavery, freedom and the working coast. A short visit can stay downtown; Pin Point and Tybee deserve separate transport and time.

THE ATLAS VERDICT

Enjoy the squares; make room for the history.

Two days cover the historic core and art collections. Add a Gullah Geechee museum and cemetery day, then an unhurried Tybee outing, when you have four full days.

WHO WILL LOVE IT

Patient walkers and history-minded diners

Travelers interested in architecture, Black history, small museums and meals with a sense of place. A central base makes the first two days practical without a car.

WHO SHOULD THINK TWICE

A nonstop outdoor checklist

Summer humidity, thunderstorms, root-raised paving and riverfront steps can be exhausting. House museums are not uniformly step-free, and cemetery visits demand respect rather than spectacle.

THE ONE RULE

Let operating days decide the order.

Telfair currently closes Monday, Pin Point opens Thursday–Saturday, and Tybee’s lighthouse closes Tuesday. Keep the four geographic days intact and reorder them around those calendars and actual dinner reservations.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The details that save a day.

Airport

Use the current airport pickup information

SAV lists licensed taxis outside baggage claim and rideshare pickup at the north baggage-claim entrance. Allow roughly 30–45 minutes to central Savannah in ordinary conditions, plus waiting. Check current CAT service rather than relying on old 100 X Airport Express advertisements; arrange late-night or accessible transport directly.

Verify current guidance ↗
Transit

DOT helps inside the historic district

CAT currently publishes free DOT loops, with weekday 07:00–19:00 and weekend 10:00–18:00 service; holidays differ. Check rider alerts and the actual stop before relying on it. The downtown shuttle is not a Tybee or Pin Point transfer.

Verify current guidance ↗
Reservations

A pass is not an Owens-Thomas time slot

Telfair’s three-site pass currently lasts seven days, but Owens-Thomas tour times are assigned onsite first-come. Check in early. First African Baptist Church and major dinners have separate booking processes, and church events can override tours.

Verify current guidance ↗
Weather

Plan for heat and coastal storms

Check NWS Charleston’s Savannah forecast and hazards before cemetery, garden or island outings. Take water and shade breaks, shorten exposed afternoons and move indoors during lightning; tropical weather can disrupt roads and attraction access.

Verify current guidance ↗
Safety

Give the river and the shore different rules

River Street is a working waterfront, not a swimming site. On Tybee, obey beach signs and lifeguard advice, avoid unsafe currents and do not enter the water during storms. Busy waterfront crowds also call for secure belongings and a planned evening return.

Verify current guidance ↗
Accessibility

Check the actual entrance and walking surface

Owens-Thomas has original stairs and no elevator. Riverfront level changes, cobbles and tree roots can affect an otherwise short route. Ask museums about alternatives and confirm vehicle access before booking outlying trips; DOT is described as ADA compliant.

Verify current guidance ↗
Tipping

Budget for service and check the bill

For a served restaurant meal, 18–20% is a useful customary good-service allowance rather than a universal mandatory charge. Check included gratuities and service fees before adding more. Mrs. Wilkes accepts cash/checks rather than cards, while Crystal asks visitors not to rely on tap-to-pay.

Verify current guidance ↗
Opening days

Pin Point and Tybee need calendar planning

Pin Point currently opens Thursday–Saturday, with guided departures subject to availability. Tybee lighthouse closes Tuesday and sells ordinary tickets onsite, not online. Neither belongs in a rushed downtown afternoon; reorder whole days around their calendars.

Verify current guidance ↗
Etiquette

Respect active churches and cemeteries

Follow hosts’ photography rules, lower your voice during worship or funerals and avoid entering private residential property for photos. Bonaventure is an active cemetery; a paid tour does not make graves or memorials props.

Verify current guidance ↗
Mistakes

Do not turn lunch into an impossible reservation

Mrs. Wilkes is weekday lunch only and closes for a winter break; its queue can consume much of a morning. Common Thread’s Monday/Tuesday information conflicts, so confirm those dates. Keep a named daily-service alternative and allow travel from Thomas Square back to your hotel.
