THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Phnom Penh.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Royal architecture and Khmer sculpture

Palace district → National Museum → riverside

  1. Hotel breakfast

If arriving from KTI today, store luggage and shift this route later or start with the museum; do not promise a palace session after an uncertain flight arrival.

  2. Royal Palace public session

Confirm opening that morning and allow 90–120 minutes. If a ceremony closes it, start at the National Museum and try another day.

  3. Khéma Pasteur early lunch

Allow 15–30 minutes by tuk-tuk from the palace district and order a full meal from the current kitchen menu. If unavailable, Malis serves lunch a short ride south.

  4. National Museum

Allow 15–30 minutes back toward Street 13 and spend 90 minutes in selected galleries. If visited earlier, use this block for rest instead.

  5. Hotel check-in and heat break

Allow time for luggage and a shower rather than continuing straight into the hottest streets.

  6. Short Sisowath Quay walk

Choose a manageable public section; heavy rain means a sheltered break instead.

  7. Malis dinner

Allow 20–40 minutes to the Norodom restaurant and reserve a table. This is the main evening activity, with no fixed show afterward.

02
Day 2

S-21 history and a quiet neighborhood afternoon

Tuol Sleng → Tuol Tompoung → hotel

  1. Hotel breakfast

Discuss whether every traveler wants to visit the memorial; children and sensitive visitors can choose a separate museum or rest morning.

  2. Tuol Sleng

Allow 20–40 minutes for the ride and entrance arrangements before a two-to-three-hour visit. Buy the official ticket at the entrance and follow staff restrictions.

  3. Eleven One Kitchen TTP lunch

Allow 15–30 minutes to Street 123, then a full meal and time to decompress.

  4. Optional Russian Market browse

Keep it to 30–45 minutes if the group feels ready; otherwise return directly to the hotel.

  5. Hotel rest

Allow 20–45 minutes through traffic. Leave the remainder of the afternoon unprogrammed.

  6. Eleven One Kitchen BKK1 dinner

Use the BKK1 branch for a calm dinner. If the TTP meal was enough of the same menu, reserve Malis instead.

03
Day 3

Choeung Ek with time afterward

Southern memorial → BKK / Chaktomuk

  1. Hotel breakfast

Confirm the memorial’s opening and the return driver; if roads are flooded, defer this outing.

  2. Drive south

Allow 45–90 minutes plus an arrival and ticket buffer. Do not add a silk-island trip to this route.

  3. Choeung Ek

Allow 90–120 minutes, remain on marked paths and treat the site as a cemetery and memorial. If closed, return for a quiet city morning rather than entering unofficially.

  4. Return toward BKK

Allow 45–90 minutes, longer after heavy rain.

  5. Malis late lunch

Reserve or confirm service; Eleven One BKK1 is an all-day alternative if the return is delayed.

  6. Hotel rest

Leave space after the memorial rather than immediately scheduling entertainment.

  7. Optional Independence Monument-area walk

Use safe public paths for a short loop in cooler weather; omit it during heavy rain or ceremonies.

  8. Khéma Pasteur dinner

Confirm evening main dishes and allow a short ride from the monument area. Use Eleven One BKK1 if its kitchen plans do not suit.

04
Day 4

The northern old city

Wat Phnom → post-office district → Central Market

  1. Hotel breakfast

Reserve a northern lunch and check which Raffles dining room operates tonight.

  2. Wat Phnom

Allow 30–45 minutes from a southern hotel, then a respectful 45–60-minute visit. If steps are unsuitable, stay on the surrounding level streets.

  3. Post-office district

Walk selected blocks with shade breaks; use a short tuk-tuk ride if pavements or heat make walking uncomfortable.

  4. Khéma La Poste lunch

Allow 75–90 minutes for lunch. Confirm this branch’s kitchen service. Le Phnom 1929, with daily lunch from 11:30, is the nearby fallback.

  5. Central Market

Allow 15–30 minutes by road and browse for no more than an hour in the heat. If closed, use Brasserie Louis for a seated drink and retain a proper dinner later.

  6. Hotel rest or confirmed arts event

Allow 30–45 minutes back to the hotel after the short market visit. An arts event replaces part of this flexible block only after its venue, timing and ticket are confirmed; no standing nightly show is assumed.

  7. Restaurant Le Royal dinner

Book Tuesday–Saturday. On Sunday or Monday, use Le Phnom 1929 or Brasserie Louis instead; allow 30–60 minutes from a southern base.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Phnom Penh.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
