ATLAS MASTER DESTINATION

Phnom PenhCambodia

Phnom Penh combines Khmer royal art, a working riverfront and difficult modern history. Heat, traffic and the emotional weight of the memorial sites matter as much as distances on the map.

THE ATLAS VERDICT

Give the memorials time and the afternoons breathing room.

Start with the palace and National Museum. A second day adds Tuol Sleng and a neighborhood meal; four days allow Choeung Ek separately and the northern old city without rushing.

WHO WILL LOVE IT

History with a contemporary Khmer food scene

Visitors willing to move beyond a quick transit stop find sculpture, living religious sites and restaurants presenting Cambodian ingredients in several styles.

WHO SHOULD THINK TWICE

A compact pedestrian city

Pavements are uneven or obstructed, major roads are difficult to cross, and showers can turn a short journey into a long one. Memorial exhibitions can be distressing, especially for children.

THE ONE RULE

Plan one demanding visit per morning

Use a car or app-booked tuk-tuk between districts, return for a heat break, and confirm palace ceremonies and museum access before setting out.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The details that save a day.

Airport

Use KTI, not the former PNH transfer

Commercial operations moved to Techo International Airport in September 2025. Allow roughly 60–90 minutes by road to central hotels as a planning estimate, more in rain or peak traffic, plus terminal processing.

Verify current guidance ↗
Public transport

Check the new airport express stops

The airport publishes daily express service 05:30–23:30 along Hun Sen and Monivong boulevards. It is not a direct service to every riverside hotel; plan the last leg and check the current timetable.

Verify current guidance ↗
City rides

Use exact addresses and a return plan

Book a licensed car or app ride, verify the vehicle and destination, and arrange the Choeung Ek return before leaving. Short map distances do not remove traffic or difficult crossings.

Verify current guidance ↗
Weather

Keep room for heavy rain

Seasonal heavy rain can flood streets and delay the airport road. Check local conditions before excursions; a rainy season does not itself establish an active closure.

Verify current guidance ↗
Safety

Keep phones away from the road edge

Bag and phone snatching are risks, including from motorcycles. Use transport after dark where walking is uncomfortable and review current advice before any onward border trip.

Verify current guidance ↗
Access

Ask about actual floors and paths

Tuol Sleng says ground floors are wheelchair-accessible but upper floors use stairs. Pavements, memorial paths and Wat Phnom approaches need separate assessment; arrange suitable door-to-door transport.

Verify current guidance ↗
Memorial etiquette

Allow quiet and an alternative plan

Cover arms and legs, follow photography and room-specific rules, and avoid posed photographs in commemorative spaces. Tuol Sleng warns its exhibits may be unsuitable for ages 14 and younger.

Verify current guidance ↗
Tickets

Buy the museum ticket through the actual museum

Tuol Sleng sells entrance tickets only at its gate and accepts cash in riel or US dollars. A transport or guide reservation elsewhere is not an official online admission ticket.

Verify current guidance ↗
Money and tips

Agree fares and inspect service charges

Carry small notes, agree an unmetered fare before riding and check restaurant tax/service inclusions. Tips are discretionary; ask a guide company how its quoted fee treats gratuities.

Verify current guidance ↗
Closures and booking

Keep a palace alternative and verify performances

Royal ceremonies can close the palace at short notice. Reserve special dinners by weekday, and accept an arts event only with a current dated announcement and actual venue.
