THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Kraków.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

The old town and one Wawel route

Rynek → Wawel → Grodzka lunch → basilica → Planty

  1. Breakfast and the square

Eat before a short orientation around Rynek and the Cloth Hall exterior.

  2. Walk to Wawel

Allow 30 minutes along Grodzka and the uphill approach for a reserved 10:00 exhibition entry.

  3. Selected castle exhibition

Spend up to 2.5 hours on the route actually booked. If unavailable, use permitted grounds and move Rynek Underground here with a suitable booking; do not assume all Monday galleries open.

  4. Pod Aniołami lunch

Allow 20–30 minutes down to Grodzka, then a full hour or more at the table. Its published daily opening begins at 13:00.

  5. St Mary's Basilica

Allow 20 minutes back toward Rynek and up to an hour inside when tourist access permits. During worship, swap the order with a Planty walk.

  6. Planty and café rest

Keep this to a short garden stretch; Jama Michalika is an optional coffee stop if serving.

  7. Chimera dinner

Use the central salad bar for a simpler meal and an easy evening rather than another timed attraction.

02
Day 2

Kazimierz and occupation history

Kazimierz → Hamsa → Podgórze → Schindler's Factory

  1. Kazimierz heritage walk

Breakfast first. Explore Szeroka and surrounding streets with one religious or museum interior only if its calendar permits; otherwise use a contextual exterior walk.

  2. Hamsa lunch

Reserve a full seated meal on Szeroka and leave at least an hour to eat.

  3. Cross toward Podgórze

Allow 45–60 minutes walking with a quiet pause at the former ghetto area, or use an appropriate tram and shorter walk.

  4. Schindler's Factory

Reserve this time on a normal open day and allow 2–2.5 hours. Monday's shorter schedule and the first Tuesday closure require moving this museum to another day; use MOCAK on an open Tuesday or a river walk on Monday instead.

  5. Rest rather than another compulsory museum

Allow 40–50 minutes back toward Kazimierz. MOCAK is an alternative to the history visit, not an extra appointment after it.

  6. Zazie dinner option

Book and confirm that evening's kitchen service at Józefa 34. If unavailable, Hamsa's published daily opening offers a nearby full-meal fallback.

03
Day 3

Wieliczka without a second excursion

Kraków → salt mine → central late lunch → optional archaeology

  1. Breakfast and departure preparation

Eat and carry a snack and water. Leave your hotel by 07:45 on a checked connection allowing arrival at the mine by 09:30 for a booked 10:00 route; allow 75–90 minutes door to door including the final walk.

  2. Salt Mine Tourist Route

Allow roughly three hours including movement at the exit. Confirm language and physical suitability; adapted arrangements must be made directly in advance.

  3. Return to Krakow

Have the carried snack after the visit and allow 75–90 minutes for station access, waiting and return. Longer exit delays take priority over the optional afternoon museum.

  4. Chimera late lunch

Take a full meal near the square; its daily continuous opening avoids relying on a short lunch service.

  5. Optional Rynek Underground

Only use a prebooked slot if back and fed in time. Tuesday closes at 15:00 and the second Monday is closed: keep a square walk instead and move archaeology to Day 1 if desired.

  6. Morskie Oko dinner

A leisurely meal nearby if hungry after the late lunch; keep the evening flexible rather than filling it with more sights.

04
Day 4

A dedicated memorial day

Kraków → Auschwitz-Birkenau → Kraków

  1. Breakfast and prepared departure

The example assumes a confirmed late-morning entry, not a guaranteed slot. Carry ID matching the named card, water and a packed lunch, and check the memorial's bag restrictions.

  2. Travel to Oświęcim

Allow 2–2.5 hours overall including the final transfer to the actual entrance. Choose a real service that reaches check-in at least 30 minutes before the booked visit; shift this whole day for a different entry.

  3. Memorial visit window

For a confirmed 10:30 guided visit, allow at least the standard 3.5 hours across the sites plus movement and pauses. Follow the booked tour rather than these editorial times.

  4. Lunch and decompression

Eat in an appropriate permitted area outside the memorial route. Keep at least 45–60 minutes before the return transfer.

  5. Return journey

Allow 2–3 hours including local transfer, waits and the journey to Krakow. Do not attach another timed museum or the salt mine.

  6. Morskie Oko or a quiet simple meal

A flexible dinner after return; notify any booked restaurant if transport runs late. If memorial entry is unavailable or unsuitable, use an open city museum and a river walk, with Pod Aniołami lunch from 13:00 instead.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Kraków.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
