ATLAS MASTER DESTINATION

KrakówPoland

Krakow rewards a slow walk through its historic centre and a more deliberate encounter with Kazimierz and the city's wartime history. The salt mine and Auschwitz-Birkenau are outside the city and deserve separate planning. Reserve the entries that matter, then build meals and travel time around them.

THE ATLAS VERDICT

Give the city two days and each major excursion its own space.

Wawel tickets cover chosen exhibitions rather than one unlimited castle visit. Schindler's Factory has short Monday hours and closes the first Tuesday of the month. Since March 1, 2026 all individual Auschwitz entry cards are issued online only, including free cards; none are sold at the site.

WHO WILL LOVE IT

Layered history, walkable streets and substantial museum visits.

A weekend can combine the old town, Wawel, Kazimierz and one occupation-history museum. Four days allow the salt mine and a carefully prepared memorial visit without squeezing both excursions into an exhausting combined day.

WHO SHOULD THINK TWICE

Travelers who want every day to feel light or entirely step-free.

Wartime museums and the memorial are emotionally demanding. Historic surfaces, church towers and the standard salt-mine route pose physical constraints; adapted arrangements and a smaller selection can make a much better trip.

THE ONE RULE

Old town, Kazimierz, Wieliczka and the memorial are four distinct days.

Day 1 stands alone; add Day 2 for a weekend. Days 3–4 extend the trip with separate excursions. A memorial visit is optional and requires preparation; use another city museum day if it is not right for your party or no suitable entry remains.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The details that save a day.

Arrival

Airport rail is a separate planning decision

Use the airport's current SKA1 information for Kraków Główny and onward options. Confirm the train ticket and hotel approach; a city tram ticket is not automatically an airport rail ticket.

Verify current guidance ↗
Transit

Validate the right time and zone product

Use ZTP's current KMK ticket guide and purchasing instructions. Check the applicable city or suburban zone and validate or activate the ticket correctly before relying on it.

Verify current guidance ↗
Reservations

Reserve the exact institution and route

Wawel exhibitions, Schindler's Factory, Rynek Underground and the mine have different ticket rules. Use each official operator before paying a third party and confirm what is actually included.

Verify current guidance ↗
Memorial entry

All individual Auschwitz cards are online only

From March 1, 2026 there is no on-site individual-card sale. Guided bookings can open three months ahead; free unguided cards open only up to seven days ahead. Secure the correct named entry before committing transport.

Verify current guidance ↗
Closures

Free museum days come with limits

Schindler's Factory has short Monday hours and first-Tuesday closure. Rynek Underground closes the second Monday and has short Tuesday access. A free-admission day does not guarantee a place or allow advance booking under the usual rules.

Verify current guidance ↗
Weather

Plan for rain, cold and exposed excursion grounds

Check IMGW warnings before outdoor routes and memorial travel. Wear layers and practical footwear; wet stone, ice and long outdoor standing change the day's physical demands.

Verify current guidance ↗
Safety

Keep station and nightlife decisions deliberate

Control bags around busy transport and the square, use an identified ride service when needed, and keep clear of tram tracks. At memorials follow staff directions and the site's rules on belongings and conduct.

Verify current guidance ↗
Accessibility

Ask about adapted routes before purchasing

The standard salt-mine route includes hundreds of steps; the exit lift does not make it step-free. Historic museum entrances and uneven memorial ground also need individual assessment and advance arrangements.

Verify current guidance ↗
Food and tipping

Read the bill and the service window

Extra tipping is discretionary; check whether a service charge is included and specify any addition clearly. Pod Aniołami starts daily service at 13:00, while counter venues and café menus serve different meal needs.

Verify current guidance ↗
Common mistakes

Do not combine two major excursions by default

Wieliczka and Auschwitz-Birkenau involve different directions, entry systems and substantial visits. Separate days leave time for food, delays and reflection; check travel and entrance addresses rather than just journey time to the town.
