THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Hiroshima.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

A considered remembrance day

Peace Memorial Museum → park and Dome → Motoyasu River → Hondori

  1. Reserved museum visit

Have breakfast at the hotel and use the ticket period you actually booked. Allow 2–3 hours; a special early slot requires its corresponding booking.

  2. Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Dome

Take a gentle circuit, with time to read and sit. Keep respectful distance from mourners and ceremonies.

  3. Kanawa Seto lunch

Reserve near Motoyasu Bridge and allow 10–20 minutes from your last park stop. If full or closed, walk to Andersen for a seated lunch during confirmed service.

  4. Optional Memorial Hall

Return for 45–60 minutes only if you want more testimony today; otherwise take a quiet hotel break. It is a separate institution from the museum.

  5. Hondori at an easy pace

Allow a 10–20 minute walk from the park and a short commercial-street circuit. Heavy rain is a reason to stay under cover and finish early.

  6. Mitchan Hatchobori dinner

Allow 15–25 minutes from Hondori, plus a queue. On its Tuesday closure or announced holiday change, use the ekie branch or Kanawa Seto with its own dinner booking.

02
Day 2

Gardens and the castle grounds

Hondori → Shukkei-en → Hatchobori → Hiroshima Castle

  1. Andersen sandwich breakfast

Use the sandwich stand, not the bakery market that opens later. On a listed store closure, eat at your hotel.

  2. Shukkei-en

Allow about 25–40 minutes by tram and walking, or 15–25 by taxi. Spend an unhurried hour among the garden paths.

  3. Mitchan Hatchobori lunch

Walk roughly 15–20 minutes and join the opening queue. On Tuesday, use Andersen’s restaurant after an appropriate transfer instead.

  4. Hiroshima Castle grounds

Allow 15–25 minutes from Hatchobori on foot. See the exterior and available Ninomaru buildings; the tower is closed. In heavy rain, replace the grounds with a longer indoor meal and shopping break.

  5. Central hotel rest

Keep the afternoon open for slower garden or lunch timing.

  6. Andersen restaurant dinner

Confirm buffet service and any store closure before returning to Hondori. Kanawa Seto is the reserved alternative.

03
Day 3

Miyajima with time to stay

Hiroshima Station → Miyajimaguchi → Miyajima → city

  1. Breakfast and JR departure

Eat before leaving and allow about 60–90 minutes for rail, the terminal walk, ferry waiting and crossing. Verify the chosen ferry operator and pass coverage.

  2. Itsukushima Shrine

Walk from the island terminal and visit according to the day’s admission and tide conditions. Do not force a low-tide walk or unsafe shoreline access.

  3. Kakiya lunch

Allow 15–20 minutes back toward the shopping street and time for a queue. If Kakiya is closed or its queue is excessive, finish the island visit here, omit Daisho-in and take the ferry back for Ueno lunch. Ueno also serves seafood; travelers avoiding seafood should arrange a suitable packed lunch before leaving Hiroshima.

  4. Daisho-in

Allow roughly 20–30 minutes uphill from the shopping area. Skip the stair-heavy circuit if mobility or weather makes it unsuitable.

  5. Momijido and waterfront

Return downhill, take a small sweet break and begin the ferry journey back with plenty of daylight.

  6. Ueno early dinner at Miyajimaguchi

Use the mainland restaurant if still serving and not sold out; otherwise return to Hiroshima Station for Kanawa ekie. Allow roughly 40–60 minutes for the onward rail and walking connection.

04
Day 4

A wooded temple and a relaxed city return

Hiroshima Station → Mitaki → Hiroshima Station → central rivers

  1. Hotel breakfast

Check rain and path conditions and aim to leave the station area by 08:45 after breakfast; this day can remain entirely in the center if the hill route is unsuitable.

  2. Mitaki-dera

Budget about 45–75 minutes from the station area including rail and the uphill walk. Allow 1–1½ hours around the temple and use only open paths.

  3. Kanawa ekie lunch

Return downhill and by rail, allowing 45–75 minutes. Mitchan ekie is a nearby named alternative if the seafood branch is unavailable.

  4. A river walk or missed city stop

Allow 25–40 minutes to central Hiroshima. Choose a short riverside stroll or Shukkei-en if not yet visited, checking the earlier seasonal closing time.

  5. A final central meal

Reserve Kanawa Seto or use Mitchan Hatchobori on an open evening. Keep departure luggage and the next train separate from a restaurant queue.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Hiroshima.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
