ORDER THE CITY

Five rituals, without the costume.

Choose noodles in your okonomiyaki

Hiroshima’s layered version is a full meal. Confirm soba or udon and additions rather than ordering several plates automatically.

Plan for the griddle queue

Popular counters cannot always reserve seats; keep the next admission flexible.

Give oysters a proper meal

Ask what is seasonal and how it is cooked, rather than assuming a spring raw-oyster notice applies to your date.

Eat anagomeshi on the correct shore

Ueno’s main restaurant is at Miyajimaguchi on the mainland, not beside Itsukushima Shrine.

Treat sweets as a pause

Enjoy a momiji manju at a shop’s eating area; do not feed island deer or carry exposed food past them.

RESERVATION CLOCK

Book by pressure, not prestige.

Weeks aheadSmall rooms, tasting menus, major weekends, and true occasion meals.

Several daysPrime dinner times and restaurants tied to a fixed show or attraction.

Same dayMarkets, counters, bakeries, and casual institutions after checking hours.
