THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Wellington.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

National context and Te Aro

Te Papa → Cuba Street → waterfront

  1. Breakfast at your accommodation

Eat before the museum and bring a light rain layer.

  2. Te Papa

Allow around three hours for selected galleries; international adult admission applies. Christmas Day requires a different plan.

  3. Floriditas lunch

Allow 15–25 minutes to walk from the museum and order a full meal.

  4. Cuba Street walk

Browse at a relaxed pace. From October 10 onward, a confirmed City Gallery ticket can replace this block; before reopening use the street route or longer museum time.

  5. Waterfront or rest

Choose a short sheltered section only if the wind is manageable.

  6. Ortega dinner

Reserve Tuesday–Saturday. On Sunday choose a confirmed Logan Brown sitting; Monday use Floriditas dinner.

02
Day 2

Gardens and the civic city

Cable Car → Botanic Garden → Thorndon → Queens Wharf

  1. Breakfast near your hotel

Allow time to reach the Lambton Quay Cable Car entrance.

  2. Cable Car to Kelburn

Explore the lookout and choose a suitable garden route. In strong wind or if slopes do not suit, return by rail and shorten the gardens.

  3. Continue toward the northern centre

Allow 30–45 minutes for a leisurely descent or a return rail trip and city walk.

  4. Pravda lunch

Reserve Monday–Saturday. On Sunday eat at Floriditas instead, using a 20–30 minute taxi or bus allowance back to Parliament and a later tour booking.

  5. Reserved Parliament tour

Arrive at least the instructed security lead time; shift this block to the actual offered departure. If unavailable, use the exterior only where permitted.

  6. Wellington Museum

Allow about 90 minutes before its usual 17:00 close. If the Parliament slot is later, move the museum into Day 3 afternoon.

  7. Little Penang dinner

Confirm the Victoria Street sitting; Floriditas is an alternative Monday–Saturday, and Logan Brown a reserved Sunday option.

03
Day 3

A conservation day

City → Zealandia → city

  1. Breakfast at your accommodation

Bring waterproof layers and suitable shoes.

  2. Transfer to Zealandia

Allow 30–45 minutes by arranged vehicle; use the current shuttle or bus plan only after checking its times and boarding point.

  3. Sanctuary walk or booked guided visit

Choose an accessible route with staff advice. Wildlife sightings depend on conditions.

  4. Rātā Café lunch

Confirm kitchen service on arrival. If unavailable, shorten the walk and return to Floriditas for a late lunch before its confirmed kitchen cutoff.

  5. Return and rest

This leaves space for Wellington Museum if moved from Day 2. In severe weather swap this entire day with the central museums.

  6. Havana dinner

Use a confirmed Tuesday–Saturday kitchen sitting. Sunday use Logan Brown; Monday use Floriditas.

04
Day 4

Film craft and a clear-weather lookout

Miramar → Mount Victoria → central city

  1. Floriditas breakfast

If Miramar lunch service is not confirmed, arrange a substantial packed meal now rather than relying on a closed café.

  2. Transfer to Miramar

Allow 45–60 minutes including the final walk and tour check-in; public transport may take longer.

  3. Booked Wētā Workshop tour

Use the exact meeting point and follow photography rules. Swap days if no suitable ticket is offered.

  4. The Larder lunch

Use a confirmed café sitting near the tour. If unavailable, eat the packed meal in a suitable sheltered public place or return to Floriditas for lunch; do not substitute a drink for food.

  5. Mount Victoria outlook

Allow 30–45 minutes for a road transfer and the final approach. In wind or low cloud return to the hotel instead.

  6. Rest in the centre

Keep the afternoon flexible for departure packing or an omitted gallery.

  7. Logan Brown dinner

Reserve Wednesday–Sunday. Monday or Tuesday use a confirmed Floriditas dinner instead.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
