Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.
ROUTING LOGIC
Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.
01
Day 1
River, lanes and a respectful evening
Central ghats → old-city lanes → Dashashwamedh
Light breakfast and departure check
Have a hotel-prepared snack and water. Adjust departure to actual sunrise and legal boat hours; if service is suspended, wait for daylight and take an upper-ghat walk.
Permitted dawn boat outing
Allow 60–90 minutes including careful boarding, with a fitted life jacket and agreed return ghat. This is an example time, not a guaranteed year-round departure.
Full hotel breakfast and rest
Return for a substantial meal and a break before the busy lanes.
Old-city walk
Use a guide for a two-hour route around public lanes and temple approaches. A temple interior visit requires its own confirmed procedure and can replace the walk.
Darbhanga lunch
Reserve ahead at BrijRama and confirm a dry-land approach from the walk; if unavailable, return to your hotel for lunch rather than relying on snacks.
Hotel rest
Protect a long break after the early start.
Kashi Chaat Bhandar snack
Allow time to reach Godowlia, then walk toward the ghat without blocking processions. Skip the snack if it would make ceremony arrival late.
Aarti arrival window
Confirm that day’s start and arrive 45–60 minutes beforehand; move this stop seasonally. Use a public position with a clear exit and leave if crowd pressure is uncomfortable.
Darbhanga dinner or your hotel
Reserve a flexible post-ceremony meal; allow 30–45 minutes for the crowded exit and short walk. Call if the ceremony runs late instead of rushing through crowds.
02
Day 2
Sarnath and a northern-city meal
Central Varanasi → Sarnath → Nadesar
Hotel breakfast
Choose a non-Friday museum day. If Friday, swap this day with Day 3, remembering BHU’s Sunday closure.
Drive to Sarnath
Allow 60–90 minutes from the central ghats, including the walk to the car pickup.
Sarnath site and museum
Allow roughly three hours for both, with separate admission and a water break. If the museum is unexpectedly closed, visit permitted archaeological and temple areas and move the museum to another day.
Transfer to Nadesar
Allow 30–60 minutes in traffic and advise the restaurant if delayed.
Varuna lunch
Reserve within the published lunch service ending at 15:00. If a delay makes that impractical, confirm a meal at Chowk in the same hotel.
Return and rest
Allow 30–60 minutes to the old-city edge, plus the final walk.
Baati Chokha dinner
Confirm the Teliabag-side Varanasi branch and allow 30–60 minutes from a central hotel; if the extra ride is tiring, dine at the hotel and keep this meal for a northern-base stay.
03
Day 3
The southern city and university collection
Assi → BHU → Assi / Shivala
Assi morning program
Check the actual seasonal start the previous day. Observe quietly from a permitted upper area; a later walk replaces the program if access changes.
Hotel breakfast
Take a full breakfast and rest after the early start.
Transfer toward BHU
Allow 30–45 minutes from Assi including campus entry and the internal approach.
Bharat Kala Bhavan
Spend 90–120 minutes in selected galleries. Closed Sunday and national holidays; May–June uses earlier hours, so move this stop earlier in summer or swap days.
Return to Assi
Allow 30–45 minutes, without assuming unrestricted shortcuts through campus.
Pizzeria Vaatika lunch
Confirm service at the Assi branch. If unavailable, reserve Darbhanga and allow a further 30–45 minutes to its agreed approach, or eat at your hotel.
Rest, then a short Shivala walk
Use only open dry paths and turn back before fatigue; this afternoon is deliberately light.
Dinner near your southern base
Pizzeria Vaatika is the named casual option if you ate elsewhere at lunch; confirm the evening kitchen, or use your hotel dining room.
04
Day 4
Opposite-bank history and a final meal
Assi / central city → Ramnagar → central ghats
Hotel breakfast
Confirm fort museum access and arrange a road vehicle with a return pickup.
Drive to Ramnagar
Allow 60–90 minutes for the road and bridge, longer if a local event changes traffic.
Ramnagar Fort
Spend 90–120 minutes in the areas open to visitors. If access is restricted, skip the crossing and choose a longer permitted southern-city walk.
Return by road
Allow 60–90 minutes to Assi and do not rely on an unarranged boat shortcut.
Pizzeria Vaatika late lunch
Confirm the Assi kitchen in advance; if unavailable, use your hotel’s arranged meal.
Hotel rest
Leave time to pack and recover; no additional distant sight is necessary.
Approach BrijRama Palace
Allow 45–75 minutes depending on the starting hotel and the agreed dry-land or permitted boat approach.
Aangan tasting dinner
Reserve the full evening, confirm the menu and duration, and do not place an airport or train departure afterward. Darbhanga is the simpler alternative in the same palace.
DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM
Four ways travelers exhaust Varanasi.
Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.
Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.
Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.
Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
