Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.
ROUTING LOGIC
Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.
01
Day 1
Saturday: a complete medina day
Dar El Jeld → Central Market → medina souks → Dar El Jeld
Breakfast at Le Rooftop, Dar El Jeld
Reserve the breakfast and outside-guest access in advance; allow an hour. If staying elsewhere, confirm this service before arranging the guide.
Central Market orientation
Allow 25–35 minutes to reach the market and about 45 minutes among the sections actually trading. If closed for a holiday, begin the medina circuit instead.
Medina and Zitouna precinct
Allow 15–25 minutes back into the souks and a 90-minute guided circuit. The mosque exterior is the default; prayer-hall access is not promised.
Lunch at Fondouk El Attarine
Confirm the Saturday kitchen and reserve; allow 90 minutes. If unavailable, book lunch at Dar El Jeld Restaurant and allow 20–30 minutes to reach it.
A short craft-and-courtyard circuit
Spend up to an hour on shops or courtyards actually open, without turning the afternoon into another long walk.
Return and rest
Allow up to 30 minutes for the hotel transfer and leave at least 90 minutes free before the dinner pickup.
Dinner at Dar El Jeld Restaurant
Reserve the traditional restaurant, not just the hotel Rooftop. Allow a full two-hour meal and plan the final walk or vehicle pickup with the hotel.
02
Day 2
Sunday: Bardo and the modern center
Medina → Bardo → Avenue Habib Bourguiba → medina
Breakfast at Le Rooftop
Confirm Sunday breakfast access and allow an hour before the arranged pickup.
Drive to Bardo
Allow 30–45 minutes plus 15 minutes for security; target a confirmed entry around 10:00, respecting seasonal opening.
Bardo National Museum
Choose a focused 2.5-hour visit. If a security or exceptional closure intervenes, retain the central-city afternoon and move the museum to an open day; Monday is normally closed.
Transfer to the modern center
Allow 30–45 minutes plus a 15-minute restaurant arrival margin.
Lunch at Le Kilimandjaro
Confirm Sunday service at El Mouradi Africa in advance and allow 90 minutes. If it cannot confirm, reserve Le Rooftop instead and take the car directly to its medina drop-off.
Avenue Habib Bourguiba circuit
Allow about an hour around public central streets. Avoid demonstrations and security cordons; do not photograph police or government security arrangements.
Hotel rest
Allow a short taxi transfer if needed and keep the early evening free.
Dinner at Le Rooftop
Book the hotel venue’s Sunday dinner; Dar El Jeld’s separate traditional restaurant is closed Sunday. Allow 90 minutes and a planned return.
Reserve the early meal and finish by 08:30; meet the driver at the agreed medina drop-off.
Road transfer to Carthage
Allow 45–75 minutes and a 15-minute arrival margin. The sample uses a car; check current TGM operation before substituting rail.
Punic ports landscape
Spend about 45 minutes interpreting the harbor forms, finishing by 11:00. Confirm any separately ticketed room; do not assume Carthage Museum galleries are open.
Antonine Baths
Leave the ports at 11:00, allowing 15–20 minutes for the local transfer and the remaining time for entry. Spend about 75 minutes on a focused route, finishing around 12:45. Carry water and shorten the walk in heat; confirm site opening before departure.
Transfer to Horizon, Mövenpick Gammarth
Allow 30–45 minutes plus 15 minutes for hotel arrival; a longer archaeology visit requires a later confirmed lunch.
Reserved lunch at Horizon
Confirm this à-la-carte lunch time and outside-guest access; allow 90 minutes. If the kitchen cannot confirm, book an earlier service and shorten the bath visit accordingly.
Return to Tunis and rest
Allow 45–75 minutes, then at least 90 minutes off your feet. No beach outing or extra museum is added.
Dinner at Dar El Jeld Restaurant
Reserve Monday dinner and allow a full meal window. If archaeological sites were unexpectedly closed, retain the meal and use a shorter coastal morning instead.
04
Day 4
Tuesday: palace, hilltop village and La Marsa
Tunis → Sidi Bou Saïd → La Marsa → Tunis
Breakfast at Le Rooftop
Confirm the early service, allow an hour and meet the driver by 08:45.
Transfer to Sidi Bou Saïd
Allow 45–75 minutes plus 15 minutes for the palace entrance; choose the closest permitted drop-off if slopes are difficult.
Ennejma Ezzahra
Allow 90 minutes for the palace and musical heritage. In the September–June schedule, finish before the 13:00 midday break. If closed for a holiday, use a shorter village circuit instead.
Village walk
Allow 45–60 minutes on a compact route, with a seated pause. Do not descend to the harbor and climb back just before lunch.
Lunch at Au Bon Vieux Temps
Reserve Tuesday lunch and allow 90 minutes. Dar Zarrouk is a nearby alternative only after confirming its service and access.
Transfer to La Marsa
Allow 20–30 minutes, then a short seafront walk and café pause of about an hour; skip the walk in strong wind or heat.
Return to the central hotel
Allow 45–75 minutes, reaching the hotel around 17:15–17:45. Rest before the final dinner.
Dinner at Chez Slah
Confirm Tuesday dinner directly at the rue Pierre de Coubertin address and allow 20–30 minutes for the transfer plus an arrival margin. If unavailable, reserve Le Rooftop and keep the same relaxed meal window.
DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM
Four ways travelers exhaust Tunis.
Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.
Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.
Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.
Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
