THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in San Francisco.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Bay history and neighborhood streets

Pier 33 / Pier 15 → Wharf → Chinatown → North Beach

  1. Breakfast and reach Pier 33

Eat beforehand; allow 30–45 minutes from a central hotel. Use the check-in time on your booked Alcatraz departure, not an assumed walk-up slot.

  2. Alcatraz when operating

Reserve roughly 3.5–4.5 hours including ferry travel. During the announced October 26–November dock closure, instead book the Exploratorium at its published opening and visit for three hours.

  3. Boudin Wharf lunch

Allow 15–25 minutes from Pier 33 on foot, then an hour for lunch. From the Exploratorium allow 25–35 minutes by walk/transit; shift lunch accordingly.

  4. Chinatown walk

Allow 25–35 minutes by bus/walk from the Wharf. Browse Grant and nearby streets for 60–90 minutes; avoid trying to add both a cable-car queue and another museum.

  5. North Beach and Washington Square

Walk 15–20 minutes north with a café break. If tired, end here; this is already a full standalone day.

  6. Hog Island dinner or early waterfront meal

Allow 25–35 minutes to the Ferry Building and check service/table availability; Gott’s is the counter-service backup. Keep an hour or more for the meal.

02
Day 2

Bridge scale and Golden Gate Park

Presidio / Golden Gate Bridge → Inner Sunset → de Young

  1. Breakfast and bridge transfer

Eat near the hotel and allow 45–60 minutes by bus to the south bridge visitor area.

  2. Golden Gate Bridge partial walk

Spend 60–90 minutes on open pedestrian routes. If fog or wind is severe, shorten to the visitor area and move indoors sooner.

  3. Transfer to Inner Sunset

Allow 60–75 minutes for buses and walking across the western city, including a wait; a taxi may be faster but traffic is variable.

  4. Tartine Inner Sunset lunch

Use the Inner Sunset branch’s current all-day menu, not the Mission address. Allow an hour before walking into the park.

  5. de Young and Music Concourse

Allow 20–30 minutes walking from lunch and two to three hours inside. If closed, move this museum to Day 4 and spend the afternoon on open park paths or at an operating indoor park attraction.

  6. Return and dinner

Allow 45–60 minutes to Hayes Valley, then a break before a reserved Zuni dinner around 18:30. Check current hours; no extra view stop is needed.

03
Day 3

Mission art and food at a slower pace

Guerrero Street → Dolores Park → Valencia / Clarion Alley

  1. Tartine Bakery on Guerrero

Allow 45–75 minutes for the queue and breakfast; this is the original bakery branch.

  2. Mission Dolores and Dolores Park

Walk about 10 minutes and choose the open historic visitor areas or a park loop. Admission and opening of the mission are separate from the park.

  3. Lunch along Valencia Street

Choose a currently serving taqueria or café after reading the menu; retain a real hour rather than grazing through the entire day.

  4. Clarion Alley and Valencia shops

Allow a short daylight mural visit, then independent shops. If the alley is inaccessible, remain on the main street; do not enter private spaces.

  5. Dandelion Chocolate café

Walk 10–15 minutes to the Valencia branch; share a chocolate tasting or drink and leave time for a hotel pause.

  6. Delfina dinner

Reserve the 18th Street restaurant and allow two hours. This day remains useful if a gallery or small shop is closed because the meal and outdoor route are independent.

04
Day 4

Coast and a final central meal

Lands End → Outer Richmond → Financial District

  1. Breakfast and western transfer

Allow 60–75 minutes by bus from downtown including the walk to Lands End.

  2. Lands End out-and-back

Give the route 90–120 minutes with open-path and weather checks. In rain, high wind or a closure, use the de Young if operating instead.

    Check current official details ↗
  3. Return toward the Financial District

Allow 60–75 minutes for the bus and last blocks; do not reserve lunch immediately after the nominal end of a hike.

  4. Yank Sing lunch

Confirm the chosen branch’s final seating time and reserve if possible. If transit slips, use Gott’s at the Ferry Building rather than rushing a closing kitchen.

  5. Pier 7 and Ferry Building browse

Keep 60–90 minutes for the flat waterfront. A California cable-car ride is optional only if queues and your next commitment allow.

  6. Final neighborhood dinner

Return to a favorite such as Zuni or Delfina with a reservation; allow 30–45 minutes from the waterfront. If departing, replace dinner with the full airport journey buffer.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust San Francisco.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
