THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in San Diego.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Balboa Park with breathing room

Hillcrest → Balboa Park → Bankers Hill

  1. Bread & Cie breakfast

Allow 45 minutes and buy a takeaway lunch if visiting on Monday, when Prado is closed.

  2. Transfer to Balboa Park

Allow 20–35 minutes by car including drop-off, or longer by bus and walking. Explore the El Prado architecture as institutions open.

  3. Choose one paid anchor

Visit the Japanese Friendship Garden or Fleet Science Center according to interests and the calendar. Allow 90 minutes to two hours; if closed, keep the park walk and choose another confirmed open institution.

  4. Prado lunch or prepared picnic

Reserve Prado Tuesday–Sunday and allow an hour. On Monday use the Bread & Cie picnic in a permitted park area; CUCINA does not open for lunch.

  5. A gentle park afternoon

Use gardens and a rest break rather than adding the full Zoo. If the Zoo is your priority, replace the museum program with a full Zoo day and use its operating dining facilities.

  6. CUCINA urbana dinner

Allow 25–40 minutes to walk toward Bankers Hill or use a short ride. A confirmed early dinner completes a standalone first day.

02
Day 2

The working bay and Coronado

Downtown waterfront → Midway → Coronado Ferry Landing

  1. Reach USS Midway

Allow check-in time for the current opening and confirm mobility arrangements. The museum is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas; on those days use the waterfront and a confirmed operating ferry instead.

  2. USS Midway Museum

Allow three hours for selected sections and rest; skip inaccessible ladders rather than forcing a complete circuit.

  3. The Fish Market lunch

Allow a short walk and 75 minutes for a reserved or early table near the museum.

  4. Walk to the correct ferry pier

Use the actual Flagship timetable and allow 20–30 minutes to reach and wait at the selected downtown departure point. Budget up to an hour including waiting and the crossing.

  5. Coronado landing-area stroll

Stay on the bay side for views and a café stop. Adding the ocean beach needs separate onward travel and more time.

  6. Flexible ferry return

Use the published return service with a later backup. If boats are disrupted, keep a downtown waterfront afternoon; arrange dinner after arrival rather than attaching a prepaid booking.

03
Day 3

Point Loma history and harbor

Cabrillo National Monument → Point Loma harbor

  1. Depart for Cabrillo

Allow 40–60 minutes from downtown including the drive, entrance and parking; check NPS opening and access alerts before leaving.

  2. Headland and historic area

Spend two hours on open paths and interpretation. Tidepools are optional only with suitable tide, terrain and road access, not a guaranteed addition.

  3. Mitch’s Seafood lunch

Allow 25–40 minutes to descend to the harbor and park, then an hour or more for the walk-in queue and meal.

  4. Harbor pause

Take an easy waterfront interval around the permitted public harbor paths. In poor weather shorten the day and return to the hotel; do not wait at Cabrillo for a sunset after its closing.

  5. Juniper & Ivy dinner if reserved

Allow 30–50 minutes from Point Loma to Little Italy at this time, longer in traffic. Otherwise keep dinner near the hotel; no second distant coastal attraction is needed.

04
Day 4

The northern coast at walking pace

La Jolla village → Pacific Beach

  1. Travel to La Jolla

Allow 45–75 minutes from downtown by car with parking, more by transit. Check marine conditions and local advisories.

  2. Cove and permitted coastal paths

Spend two hours with wildlife viewed from a distance. Do not enter the closed Point La Jolla or Boomer Beach areas; avoid water entry when lifeguards advise against it.

  3. Move to Pacific Beach

Allow 30–50 minutes by car including parking, or 60–90 minutes by bus and walking. If traffic is severe, remain in La Jolla for lunch and drop the second district.

  4. Oscar’s, Emerald Street lunch

Order tacos and allow queue time. Check this branch’s service before traveling; choose an open local café if the kitchen is closed.

  5. Pacific Beach promenade

Walk for 60–90 minutes with sun protection and rest. Swimming is optional and depends on lifeguards, surf and water quality.

  6. Return and a simple evening

Budget 45–75 minutes back to a downtown hotel. A South Park dinner at Buona Forchetta is optional only after checking service and allowing another 20–35 minutes locally.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust San Diego.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
