Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.
ROUTING LOGIC
Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.
01
Day 1
Upper Town without repeated climbs
Saint-Jean → fortifications → terrace → Citadelle
Paillard breakfast
Confirm the Saint-Jean opening and allow an hour; a hotel breakfast is the early-service fallback.
Fortifications and old streets
Use a 90-minute street-level circuit, with a separately reserved Parks Canada tour only if its time fits.
Aux Anciens Canadiens lunch
Daily noon opening supports this meal; allow 75–90 minutes.
Dufferin Terrace
Allow 15–20 minutes from lunch, then a short river-view walk. Retreat indoors if wind or ice makes it uncomfortable.
Citadelle guided visit
Reserve the actual departure and allow 20–30 minutes uphill plus check-in. If no suitable tour is available, retain the exterior walk and stop early.
Chez Boulay dinner
Return to the hotel first and use a confirmed table. This complete Upper Town day works independently.
02
Day 2
Lower Town and a river view
Petit-Champlain → civilization museum → ferry
Place Royale and Petit-Champlain
Have breakfast before descending; choose an accessible transfer if grades or ice are a concern.
Musée de la civilisation
Allow two hours. Regular Monday closure: swap days or extend the Lower Town streets with indoor breaks rather than promise museum entry.
Le Lapin Sauté lunch
Reserve the meal and allow 15–25 minutes from the museum plus an hour at the table.
Québec–Lévis ferry block
Allow 20–30 minutes to the terminal and boarding, then use the actual return schedule. Keep the Lévis-side stay modest; do not assume back-to-back departures.
Return to lodging
Budget the uphill connection and a real rest. Canceled ferry: a short Québec waterfront walk is enough.
La Bûche or a lighter central dinner
Use confirmed dinner service and appetite as the guide. Days 1–2 make a complete weekend.
03
Day 3
A falls day with seasonal services checked
Québec City → Montmorency Falls → Québec City
Breakfast and packed lunch
Use Paillard or the hotel; buy food before departure whenever the falls counter is closed.
Travel to the falls
Allow 40–60 minutes by road including arrival, or 60–90 by the current RTC itinerary including walks and waits.
Selected falls viewpoints
Use two hours on the open route that suits the group. The cable car is seasonal; check closures and do not substitute icy stairs for a closed lift.
La sandwicherie or the packed meal
Take a full lunch break. The counter has its own seasonal closure periods; no restaurant service is assumed in those gaps.
Optional final viewpoint and return
Leave by about 15:00 and allow the same transport margin back. Poor conditions: replace this with an indoor city day.
Buvette Scott dinner if open
Tuesday–Saturday fits its published evening service; Sunday/Monday use Aux Anciens Canadiens before 21:00. Leave time to change after the outing.
04
Day 4
Park, art and a different dinner district
Plains of Abraham → MNBAQ → Saint-Roch
Breakfast and Plains walk
Eat at the hotel, then select a 90-minute park route with breaks; winter or event closures may require a shorter section.
MNBAQ current exhibitions
Use two hours in the currently open program; confirm the day’s calendar. Riopelle opens later in October and other pavilions remain closed for works.
La Bûche lunch after returning east
Allow 30–45 minutes by walk or ride from the museum and use confirmed lunch service. Aux Anciens Canadiens is the daily noon-opening alternative.
Hotel break
Do not replace the rest with another climb.
A selected Saint-Roch walk
Allow 20–40 minutes for the downhill journey and explore around rue Saint-Joseph.
Le Clocher Penché dinner
Tuesday–Saturday only on its current calendar; Sunday/Monday retain a short neighborhood visit and eat in Upper Town instead. Arrange the uphill return.
DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM
Four ways travelers exhaust Québec City.
Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.
Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.
Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.
Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
