ORDER THE CITY

Five rituals, without the costume.

Mangú breakfast

Try the mashed plantain breakfast with eggs or cheese before a long outing. Ask which accompaniments are included rather than assuming every breakfast is a buffet.

La bandera lunch

Rice, beans and a cooked main make a useful Dominican lunch. Ask the kitchen for its daily plate when available rather than expecting every international resort restaurant to offer it.

Hot tostones

Order a portion to share and eat the twice-fried plantains promptly; a long taxi journey does them no favors.

Fish with a question

Ask which fish is actually available, its preparation and whether the price is per portion or by weight. A beach setting alone says nothing about the catch.

A small coffee break

Have a Dominican coffee after a meal and leave room for the service to take its time. Keep water and shade in the plan, especially before afternoon activity.

RESERVATION CLOCK

Book by pressure, not prestige.

Weeks aheadSmall rooms, tasting menus, major weekends, and true occasion meals.

Several daysPrime dinner times and restaurants tied to a fixed show or attraction.

Same dayMarkets, counters, bakeries, and casual institutions after checking hours.
