THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Papeete.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

The working capital

Papeete market → civic streets → Paofai → hotel

  1. Le Rétro breakfast

Use Monday–Saturday and eat a full breakfast. Sunday: have hotel breakfast and move the market earlier according to actual trading; reserve the later meals separately.

  2. Papeete market

Browse for about an hour while produce and craft vendors are active. Sunday stalls wind down early; do not schedule this as an afternoon attraction.

  3. Short guided city walk

Meet a local guide for cathedral exteriors, civic history and shaded public spaces. Church entry depends on worship and permissions.

  4. Café Maeva lunch

Confirm weekday kitchen service and the actual venue location. Weekend or closure: use Le Rétro on Saturday; Sunday arrange Te Tiare with a 30–45-minute transfer and a 13:00 table.

  5. Paofai gardens

Take a short daytime loop after lunch; with the Sunday resort alternative, omit this loop and return directly to the hotel.

  6. Hotel rest

Keep the hottest part of the afternoon flexible and confirm dinner transport.

  7. L’O à la Bouche dinner

Reserve and allow a short central walk or 15–30-minute ride. Sunday: Te Tiare with a confirmed table and 30–45-minute road allowance instead.

02
Day 2

Museum and sacred landscape

Faa’a → Punaauia museum → Paea marae → Faa’a

  1. Te Tiare breakfast

For central Papeete lodging, leave around 06:45–07:00 with a confirmed table. Finish by 08:30 and allow 30–45 minutes toward the museum.

  2. Te Fare Iamanaha

Spend two hours in the museum on Wednesday–Sunday. Tuesday requires specific group authorization; Monday or unavailable admission means swapping the whole day.

  3. Drive toward Arahurahu

Allow 25–40 minutes and take a short rest on arrival; the next visit is deliberately compact.

  4. Marae Arahurahu

Use about 45 minutes with a guide and remain on permitted ground. In heavy rain, skip this stop and have a longer museum visit.

  5. Te Tiare late lunch

Leave the marae by 13:15 and allow 45–60 minutes back toward Faa’a. Use continuous daytime cooking here; Le Lotus’s 14:00 lunch close makes it unsuitable for this late sitting.

  6. Hotel return and rest

Allow 20–45 minutes depending on the base; no additional beach circuit.

  7. Le Grillardin dinner

Tuesday–Saturday dinner only; on Sunday book Te Tiare or an available hotel restaurant. Allow 15–30 minutes from a central base, longer from a resort.

03
Day 3

The eastern coast

Papeete → Pointe Vénus → Faarumai → Arue → Papeete

  1. Le Rétro breakfast

Finish by 07:45. On Sunday use your confirmed hotel breakfast at the same time; this outdoor day works only in suitable weather.

  2. Leave for Mahina

Allow 45–60 minutes for traffic and arrival at Pointe Vénus.

  3. Pointe Vénus

Spend 45 minutes on land, leaving by 09:45; swimming is omitted from this route. No lighthouse climb is promised.

  4. Eastern-road transfer

Allow 35–50 minutes to the currently open Faarumai entrance. Omit the waterfall if alerts or local barriers prohibit access.

  5. Selected waterfall walk

Use only the permitted lower path for up to 45 minutes, leaving by 11:30. Do not add a swim or every upper waterfall.

  6. Hiti Mahana lunch

Allow 45–60 minutes back to Arue plus a 15-minute table buffer. Reserve a 75-minute meal within the published service window ending at 14:00. If delayed, use a substantial packed lunch arranged that morning; do not assume 14:00 means last orders.

  7. Return and rest

Allow 30–50 minutes to central Papeete. A brief coastal view is optional only if it does not delay the meal or return.

  8. Le Rétro dinner

Use Monday–Saturday; Sunday choose a confirmed Te Tiare table with a road transfer or your hotel restaurant.

04
Day 4

A relaxed southern garden day

Papeete → Vaipahi → Papeari lunch → west-coast return

  1. Le Rétro breakfast

Finish by 07:45. Sunday use confirmed hotel breakfast; Monday swap the day because the Papeari lunch venue is closed.

  2. Southbound coastal drive

Allow 90–120 minutes from Papeete, including traffic and a comfort stop. Use the west-coast road and avoid adding the peninsula.

  3. Vaipahi lower gardens

Take 90 minutes among the lower paths, with a shaded rest. Rain warnings or closed trails mean an indoor-day swap, not an improvised uphill hike.

  4. Restaurant Bar du Musée Gauguin lunch

Leave the gardens by 11:45 and allow 15–30 minutes toward Papeari plus a reservation buffer. Reserve Tuesday–Sunday and take about 90 minutes.

  5. Unhurried west-coast return

Allow up to two hours with one safe roadside comfort stop. The restaurant name is not permission to enter a closed museum, and Teahupo’o is not added to this route.

  6. Hotel rest

Leave margin for traffic, rental-car return or tomorrow’s airport arrangements.

  7. Le Lotus farewell dinner

Reserve non-guest dining and leave central Papeete 75 minutes before the table, allowing 45–60 minutes on the road and an arrival buffer. If unavailable, Te Tiare at the same resort is the confirmed alternative; return transport must be arranged.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Papeete.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
