Choose for the trip you want—not from a generic list of the city’s most famous neighborhoods.
TRAVEL STATUS · CHECK BEFORE BOOKING
Akechidaira Ropeway is closed for renewal from January 16, 2026 until approximately September 2027; it is not routed or offered as a bookable ride. Autumn congestion can turn the central-Nikko–Lake-Chuzenji road journey into more than four hours. The four-day plan deliberately includes a mountain overnight; do not treat regional resorts as walkable central neighborhoods.
THE BASE RULE
Ask what needs to be outside the door after dinner, which attractions own most mornings, and how many paid rides the cheaper room quietly adds.
01$
JR Nikko / Tobu-Nikko station town
Rail arrivals and budget-conscious short stays
The practical central-town base for trains, buses and a protected departure.
WATCH FORShrines are uphill and not directly outside the hotel; check night food and road noise.
02$$$
Shinkyo / Kamihatsuishimachi
Heritage-town access and historic hotels
A useful central base for bridge, shrine approaches and a reserved Kanaya/Mihashi meal.
WATCH FORSlopes, heritage stairs and tour traffic; ask about exact room/lift and street pickup.
03$$
Honcho / Takumicho
Villa and riverside-focused central stays
A quieter central-west choice for Tamozawa, yuba dining and the river.
WATCH FORFarther from trains and some dinner choices; river walks are weather dependent.
04$$$
Kirifuri / Tokorono hillside — separate outer base
Hotel-led scenery and travelers using an arranged vehicle
Useful for hillside lodging and a deliberate Yama-no-Restaurant meal.
WATCH FORNot a walkable shrine neighborhood; infrequent buses, slopes and dark roads make spontaneous evenings awkward.
05$$
Imaichi / Shimo-Imaichi — separate town base
Rail connectivity, everyday town life and longer stays
A genuine municipal town base for visitors who want more than the central heritage enclave.
