THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Naples.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Archaeology and the old centre

MANN → historic lanes → Sansevero → eastern-centre dinner

  1. MANN

Spend two-and-a-half hours on currently open collections. Tuesday: move the museum to another day and use Santa Chiara plus an appropriately timed underground visit instead.

  2. Lunch before the chapel

Allow 25–30 minutes to Da Michele and up to 90 minutes for queue and food. If the queue threatens your later ticket, eat elsewhere in the centre and return for pizza another day.

  3. Sansevero appointment

Allow 25 minutes back into the centre and an entry margin. Book the actual time; if unavailable or closed, use Santa Chiara's monumental complex after checking service hours.

  4. Spaccanapoli loop

Walk public lanes and small squares for about an hour, with coffee and a rest. Do not add a second fixed tour immediately after the chapel.

  5. Mimì alla Ferrovia dinner

Allow 25–35 minutes walking or a taxi toward Via Alfonso d'Aragona. Follow the operator's seating policy and keep the evening unhurried. For Sunday dinner, use Da Michele, whose Naples branch lists daily service; do not assume Mimì serves Sunday evenings.

02
Day 2

Pompeii as a full excursion

Napoli Garibaldi → Pompei Scavi → archaeological park → Naples

  1. Breakfast and EAV journey

Eat first, carry water and a packed lunch or plan an open on-site food stop. Allow 90 minutes from a central hotel to the park approach, including finding the EAV platforms and waiting.

  2. Pompeii entry

Use the named ticket, carry ID and choose a bounded three-to-four-hour route. Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri on the Sorrento line is different from other Pompei stations.

  3. Food and shade break

Stop in an authorized eating area inside the park or use its operating food service. Tickets do not allow re-entry, so do not exit for lunch expecting to resume the same visit.

  4. Finish the selected route

Avoid adding every suburban villa; those require the appropriate ticket and extra distance. In extreme heat shorten the visit.

  5. Return margin

Allow 90 minutes or more back to Naples, with service disruption flexibility. Do not add Vesuvius or a flight connection.

  6. La Cantina dei Mille meal

Eat near Piazza Garibaldi after returning, confirming kitchen service. If the park is unavailable or weather unsuitable, use MANN on an opening day and keep this named meal.

03
Day 3

Royal Naples and the sea

Gambrinus → Royal Palace → Santa Lucia → Mergellina

  1. Gambrinus breakfast

Take coffee and a pastry, adding enough food for the palace morning. Decide counter or table service before ordering.

  2. Royal Palace

Allow two hours. Wednesday closure: keep the square and waterfront and move the palace to an opening day.

  3. Waterfront lunch plan

Walk toward Chiaia, then use a taxi or continue at a relaxed pace toward 50 Kalò Piazza Sannazaro. Allow 45–60 minutes from the palace on foot, or substantially less driving time plus traffic.

  4. 50 Kalò lunch

Confirm service and allow a full meal. This is the western anchor, not an extra detour before another timed museum.

  5. Chosen seafront section

Walk only as far as comfortable toward Santa Lucia, with rests and transport available. Treat Castel dell'Ovo as an exterior view unless current official reopening is confirmed.

  6. Keep the afternoon indoors

Use an open palace or museum and a café; postpone the exposed promenade rather than stretching the walk in rough weather.

04
Day 4

Northern art and neighborhood history

Capodimonte or San Gennaro → Materdei → Sanità

  1. Travel uphill

Allow 45–60 minutes by bus and walking, or a taxi with traffic margin, to the actual Capodimonte entrance.

  2. Capodimonte collection

Spend two to two-and-a-half hours in open galleries. Wednesday: substitute a booked San Gennaro visit first and a longer Sanità route rather than waiting at a closed museum.

  3. Starita lunch

Allow 30–45 minutes to Materdei by suitable transport or a carefully chosen downhill walk. Eat before any further fixed appointment.

  4. Sanità neighborhood walk

Continue from Materdei into Sanità with 20–30 minutes for the walk and rest stops. San Gennaro is the morning replacement for Capodimonte, not another afternoon appointment back uphill.

  5. Poppella pastry pause

Use the Sanità branch if open, then allow 30–45 minutes to return to your hotel. If mobility or fatigue makes the hill sequence too much, choose either the museum or catacombs and keep the meal.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Naples.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
