ORDER THE CITY
Five rituals, without the costume.
A proper Jamaican breakfast
Try cooked ackee and saltfish with the day’s ground provisions at a reputable kitchen, and ask what accompanies the plate. Do not treat raw ackee as a self-prepared snack.
Jerk with the sauce on the side
Order a modest portion of jerk chicken or pork first and taste the sauce before adding more. A cold drink and a simple side make a complete lunch.
A hot patty pause
Buy one freshly served patty and check the filling; add coco bread only if you want a larger snack. Keep the stop short when a driver is waiting.
Ask about the day’s fish
Check species, preparation and whether the quoted price is for a whole fish or a portion before ordering. Availability is more useful than a permanent menu promise.
Coffee without an origin assumption
Enjoy Jamaican coffee, but ask about the producer if Blue Mountain origin matters. A souvenir label or hotel buffet sign alone is not a sourcing guarantee.
