Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.
ROUTING LOGIC
Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.
01
Day 1
Paintings, Retiro and the old centre
Prado → Retiro → Letras → Sol / Plaza Mayor
Prado with a short list
Allow 30 minutes for arrival and security, then roughly 2.5 hours with selected painters. Keep the entry slot as the day’s only fixed morning appointment.
A short Retiro circuit
Walk 15–20 minutes east for a limited park loop before lunch. The Crystal Palace interior is closed. In unsafe park weather stay in Letras and keep the walking short rather than adding another compulsory museum.
Lhardy
Allow 30–40 minutes west from the park through Letras to a reserved late lunch, choosing a service time the restaurant actually offers. If hungry earlier, shorten the park loop. A lighter Letras lunch is an alternative.
Sol, Plaza Mayor and San Ginés
Continue west from Lhardy with a hotel rest if needed. Chocolate at San Ginés can be the evening treat; choose dinner by appetite rather than adding another large reservation.
02
Day 2
Royal Madrid and La Latina
Royal Palace → La Bola → Plaza Mayor → La Latina
Royal Palace
Arrive 30 minutes ahead of a booked slot and allow about two hours inside. If an official event closes it, use a separately booked Royal Collections Gallery visit.
La Bola
Allow 10–15 minutes on foot and a relaxed cocido lunch. Reserve the table and do not stack it directly against the palace exit time.
Plaza Mayor to Cava Baja
Walk via Plaza de Oriente and the old centre, allowing an hour of wandering plus a café break. On a Sunday or public holiday, visit El Rastro earlier and shift the palace later only if its booking allows.
La Latina
Stay in the district for small plates or a reserved Casa Lucio dinner if lunch was light. Debod is an optional 30–40-minute walk from the palace area, not an extra mandatory stop.
03
Day 3
Modern art and a quieter literary afternoon
Reina Sofía → Atocha → Letras → Thyssen option
Reina Sofía
Book a non-Tuesday visit and allow three hours including arrival. On Tuesday swap this whole day with Day 4; do not arrive expecting Guernica access.
El Brillante, Atocha
Walk 5–10 minutes to the Atocha bar for a calamari sandwich. It takes no reservations, so keep a 30-minute queue margin or eat after the rush.
Letras at walking pace
Allow 20–25 minutes toward Plaza de Santa Ana, then stop at bookshops and cafés. Art enthusiasts can replace this with Thyssen, checking its separate ticket and exhibition hours.
A rest and an unhurried dinner
Return to the hotel before dinner. Stay in Letras or choose a reserved table at Lhardy if Day 1 used a lighter lunch; this day does not need another cross-city journey.
04
Day 4
Markets and northern neighborhoods
Mercado de la Paz → Chamberí → Malasaña → Debod option
Salamanca and Mercado de la Paz
Explore Recoletos and the market. Confirm Casa Dani’s branch opening before committing; on a closed market day start in Chamberí and move the meal to La Ardosa.
Casa Dani
Take a tortilla or current lunch menu, allowing time for the busy counter. A 30–40-minute walk or a short taxi journey afterward reaches the Chamberí museum area.
Chamberí with an honest Sorolla option
Before October 15, do not plan an interior Sorolla visit. After that date, visit only the extension if its opening and admission are confirmed; the historic house remains closed. Continue 20–30 minutes toward Malasaña.
La Ardosa and optional western views
Use La Ardosa for a small plate, then either stay around Dos de Mayo or allow 25–35 minutes toward Debod before daylight fades. Skip the viewpoint in rain or if the group needs a shorter day.
DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM
Four ways travelers exhaust Madrid.
Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.
Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.
Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.
Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
