Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.
ROUTING LOGIC
Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.
01
Day 1
Upper city and the fortress edge
Ville Haute → Fëschmaart → Bock → Corniche → palace
Upper-city orientation
Walk the squares and palace exterior; October has no routine palace interior tour.
Bock Casemates
Use the official timed entry; allow 60–90 min. If stairs/claustrophobia exclude the tunnels, continue the upper-town view walk.
Lunch: Brasserie Guillaume
Walk 10–20 min back to Place Guillaume II; reserve desired seating.
Lëtzebuerg City Museum
Allow 90–120 min and confirm elevators/current weekly hours. If closed, move it to Day 2; do not repeat a closed-door route.
Corniche and Chocolate House
A short upper-level panorama then a sweet pause; no automatic steep descent before dinner.
Hotel rest
Keep evening energy rather than enter every church/museum.
Dinner: Clairefontaine
Reserve on an operating night; Guillaume or Um Dierfgen is a more casual fallback.
02
Day 2
One valley, one collection
Ville Haute → Grund → Fëschmaart → upper town
Grund by public lift
Check Saint-Esprit lift operation and use a modest river/street loop; wet cobbles warrant shorter distances.
Valley architecture and river
Stay at this level rather than crisscrossing the gorge; museum/abbey interiors are not assumed open.
Lunch: Mosconi if booked and serving
Current lunch is Tuesday–Friday; on other days use Guillaume after returning by lift. Leave 20–30 min for the level change.
Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart
Allow two hours; regular Mondays closed. Current general admission is paid unless a published exemption/window applies.
Coffee: Knopes city center
Walk 10–15 min; operator's Saturday/weekday hours differ, with no assumed Sunday service.
Hotel reset
Plan the dinner's level and route before leaving again.
Dinner: Um Dierfgen
Reserve and confirm weekly service; historic multi-level seating needs discussion for mobility requirements.
03
Day 3
Kirchberg art and a southern neighborhood
Center → Kirchberg → Gare/Bonnevoie → center
Tram to Philharmonie–Mudam
Allow 20–35 min from center plus 10–15 min final walk; check live diversions.
Mudam
Allow two hours for current exhibitions; if closed, swap with Nationalmusée on its open day.
Lunch: Oberweis Grand-Rue
Return by tram/walk with 30–40 min allowance; aim within the currently listed hot-kitchen window ending 14:30.
Pfaffenthal panoramic elevator and short valley walk
Allow 20–30 min approach; check maintenance and use the lift rather than a steep stair route. Keep the loop short.
Hotel or tram to Bonnevoie
Rest first if needed; Gare plus the final neighborhood walk needs its own transfer.
Meal: Bouneweger Stuff on a serving evening
Confirm kitchen separately from bar hours. Monday/Sunday close at 18:00: use lunch there instead and dinner at Guillaume.
Checked return
Use the live bus/tram route, allowing a final uphill walk if staying in Ville Haute.
04
Day 4
Vianden regional alternative or one guided tunnel
Luxembourg → Ettelbruck → Vianden → Luxembourg
Breakfast and connection check
Pick up a simple breakfast; verify castle hours, Ettelbruck works, rail/bus connections and a useful return.
Train then bus to Vianden
Budget 90–120 min door to town including interchange/waiting, then additional uphill walking or taxi.
Vianden Castle
Allow two hours; slopes and stairs mean a separate access discussion before departure.
Lunch: Restaurant Pizzeria Petry
Walk down to 15 Rue de la Gare, allowing 25–40 min from the castle; operator currently serves lunch Wednesday–Monday, with July/August daily service. Tuesday: bring a picnic or select an open town kitchen.
Keep 30–45 min for descent and bus margin; allow 90–120 min back. Bad weather/closures: remain in the capital and book Pétrusse instead of Bock, not in addition.
Hotel rest
No Mudam or second regional stop on return.
Dinner: Brasserie Guillaume
Central, checked venue for the return evening; reserve and confirm kitchen service.
DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM
Four ways travelers exhaust Luxembourg City.
Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.
Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.
Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.
Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
