THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Lisbon.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

High Alfama to the river

Castelo → Santa Luzia → Alfama → Praça do Comércio → Chiado

  1. Castelo de São Jorge

Use a suitable bus/taxi approach and leave 30 minutes for the final access and entry; spend up to two hours. In unsafe weather start in Baixa instead.

  2. Santa Luzia and Alfama descent

Allow 45–60 minutes with stops and choose a route without unsuitable stairs; the shortest map line may not work.

  3. Alfama lunch

Choose an open restaurant near Largo do Chafariz de Dentro with a posted menu and rest for an hour.

  4. Museu do Fado

Allow 60–90 minutes; closed Monday, when the lower Alfama walk can replace it.

  5. Praça do Comércio and Baixa

Walk west along the lower streets for 25–35 minutes; this is the low-gradient final walking section.

  6. Taberna at Bairro do Avillez

Allow 25–35 minutes uphill from the square or take a suitable ride; reserve the correct restaurant.

02
Day 2

Belém with one interior priority

Belém → Jerónimos → tower riverfront → MAAT exterior

  1. Travel to Belém

Allow 45–60 minutes from central lodging by rail/bus/tram plus walking; check current service rather than depending on a particular heritage tram.

  2. Jerónimos cloister

Use the current entry arrangement and leave queue time. Monday or exceptional closure: swap this day, or make an exterior waterfront day.

  3. Pastéis de Belém and lunch

Have the pastry here, but add a savory meal or sandwich rather than calling one tart lunch; allow 60–75 minutes.

  4. Belém Tower exterior or reserved interior

Allow 25–35 minutes walking to the tower using the proper crossings. Interior admission is optional and depends on the current capacity system.

  5. Waterfront toward MAAT

The walk east can take 40–50 minutes; shorten by bus/taxi if tired. Exterior first, exhibition only if time and current programme suit.

  6. Cervejaria Trindade dinner

Return to Chiado with 60–75 minutes of transfer and recovery margin and use a reservation.

03
Day 3

Reopened collection and central food

Gulbenkian → Saldanha → Avenida / Restauradores → Intendente

  1. Gulbenkian Museum

Plan 2–3 hours plus the garden. Closed Tuesday: exchange with Day 4 or use an open CAM programme only after checking it separately.

  2. Lunch near the garden

Use a currently operating foundation café or a restaurant around Avenida de Berna; leave time to sit rather than eating while transferring.

  3. Avenida da Liberdade and Restauradores

Allow 30–45 minutes by metro/bus and walking from the museum; browse downhill at an easy pace.

  4. Confeitaria Nacional pastry pause

Walk 10–15 minutes from Restauradores to Praça da Figueira; choose a small pastry if dinner is soon.

  5. Ramiro seafood dinner

Allow 20–30 minutes uphill on foot or use a short ride; agree shellfish portions and the budget before ordering.

04
Day 4

Modern riverside and a final central meal

Oriente → Oceanário → Parque das Nações → Restauradores

  1. Metro to Oriente

Allow 40–60 minutes from the old centre including transfers and the 15–25-minute walk toward the aquarium.

  2. Oceanário

Spend two to three hours; if date-specific access changes, use the waterfront and a later ticket rather than crossing to Belém.

  3. Lunch in Parque das Nações

Choose an open restaurant by a posted menu or the Oceanário’s Submerso if its current service fits; sit for at least an hour.

  4. Waterfront promenade

A level afternoon without a compulsory cable-car ride; move indoors or end early during strong wind or rain.

  5. Return to the hotel

Allow about an hour from the waterfront to central lodging, more if lifts or trains are disrupted.

  6. Solar dos Presuntos dinner

Reserve the Restauradores restaurant; early departures can replace this with lunch near Oriente.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Lisbon.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
