THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Kolkata.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Maidan, Victoria and Park Street

Maidan hotel → Victoria Memorial → cemetery → Park Street

  1. Hotel breakfast

Confirm Victoria gallery access and any event closure before leaving. The Indian Museum is not a fallback in 2026.

  2. Victoria Memorial

Allow two hours for selected galleries plus a short garden circuit; use seating and shade.

  3. Sonargaon lunch

Allow 20–35 minutes to Taj Bengal and reserve a 75–90-minute meal. Use a Park Street restaurant if the sitting is unavailable.

  4. Hotel rest

Return by about 14:45 and keep two hours out of peak heat.

  5. South Park Street Cemetery

Visit only with confirmed daylight access for 60 minutes; otherwise use the Maidan or a confirmed gallery.

  6. Park Street orientation

Walk a short, lit section and avoid treating traffic lanes as a promenade.

  7. Arsalan dinner

Allow a short car transfer to the exact branch; reserve or arrive with queue time.

02
Day 2

North Kolkata books, homes and craft

Jorasanko → College Street → Kumartuli → Ballygunge

  1. Hotel breakfast and museum check

Confirm Jorasanko’s opening and any university event before traveling north.

  2. Jorasanko Thakur Bari

Allow 90 minutes, following photography rules and open-room instructions.

  3. College Street

Allow 20–35 minutes by car, then browse for an hour without blocking stalls.

  4. Indian Coffee House lunch

Order a substantial meal rather than coffee alone and leave by 14:00; use a confirmed nearby restaurant if its kitchen is limited.

  5. Hotel or café rest

Return to the hotel if heat or rain is severe; otherwise take a seated two-hour break in a confirmed café.

  6. Kumartuli guided walk

Meet a guide and spend 75 minutes with explicit consent before photographs or workshop entry.

  7. Transfer south

Allow 60–90 minutes to Ballygunge in traffic.

  8. 6 Ballygunge Place dinner

Reserve the original Ballygunge location and allow a full regional meal.

03
Day 3

The working river and Belur

Central hotel → Mallick Ghat → Belur Math → central hotel

  1. Early hotel breakfast or packed meal

Carry water and eat before entering the working market.

  2. Mallick Ghat market approach

Use a guide for 45–60 minutes, stay out of porters’ paths and avoid unconsented portraits.

  3. Transfer to Belur

Use a confirmed car or rail route. Take a ferry only if the operator and weather confirm service; allow 60–90 minutes.

  4. Belur Math

Allow two hours across the open shrine and museum spaces, pausing during prayer or closures.

  5. Return for lunch

Allow 60–90 minutes back to central Kolkata. If the river service is suspended, use the same road or rail plan.

  6. Oh! Calcutta late lunch

Reserve a service that explicitly accepts the late time; otherwise use a hotel restaurant.

  7. Hotel rest

Keep the afternoon free after the early start and transfers.

  8. Oh! Calcutta dinner

Reserve the currently listed Kolkata location; if the late lunch ran long, choose a lighter confirmed hotel dinner.

  9. Optional Balaram Mullick sweets stop

Choose a nearby confirmed branch for one small dessert; do not cross the city solely for it.

04
Day 4

South Kolkata art and Alipore

Ballygunge → Birla Academy → Alipore → central hotel

  1. 6 Ballygunge Place or hotel breakfast

Use the hotel if the restaurant has no confirmed morning sitting. Check the Birla Academy exhibition before departure.

  2. Birla Academy

Allow 60–90 minutes on a confirmed open day. If no exhibition is running, substitute a neighborhood walk or longer rest.

  3. Transfer to Alipore

Allow 30–60 minutes and reserve lunch rather than relying on spontaneous entry.

  4. Sonargaon lunch

Use a 90-minute sitting and choose a Bengali meal; if already visited, use another Taj Bengal restaurant with a confirmed session.

  5. Alipore garden or confirmed institution

Choose one open, accessible stop and spend no more than 90 minutes; do not fill the day with unverified museum entries.

  6. Hotel rest

Allow 30–60 minutes back and protect a real break.

  7. Royal Vega dinner

Book only if the EM Bypass transfer suits the hotel location; otherwise dine close to the hotel.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Kolkata.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
