Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.
ROUTING LOGIC
Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.
01
Day 1
Western hill and central Kathmandu
Swayambhunath → Basantapur → Thamel
Swayambhunath
Eat breakfast first and arrange a driver to the agreed approach. Allow around 90 minutes and shorten the visit if steps, rain or air quality make it uncomfortable.
Kathmandu Durbar Square
Allow 25–45 minutes by road and two hours with a local guide. Follow current restoration and religious boundaries.
Roadhouse Café Thamel lunch
Allow 20–40 minutes to Thamel and have a full meal.
Garden of Dreams
Take a short local walk or transfer and rest in the garden. In heavy rain, skip it and return to the hotel.
A short Thamel errand or walk
Keep this optional; if a site was closed, move it to another verified opening rather than extending the day into exhaustion.
02
Day 2
The eastern sacred sites
Boudha → Pashupatinath → Battisputali
Boudhanath
Allow a calm circuit, respectful observation and any monastery visit that is actually permitted.
Roadhouse Café Boudha lunch
Stay in the precinct for a substantial meal and a seated break.
Pashupatinath visitor areas
Allow 20–45 minutes by road. Use a guide, respect cremation privacy and remain outside restricted temple areas. If access is curtailed by an event, stay longer in Boudha instead.
Rest near the hotel
Do not turn the gap into another cross-valley excursion.
Krishnarpan dinner
Reserve at The Dwarika’s in Battisputali and allow the actual multi-course duration. Toran is a nearby alternative if the tasting format is unavailable or unsuitable.
03
Day 3
Patan with room to look closely
Patan Museum → Café Swotha → old-city lanes
Transfer to Patan
Allow 40–75 minutes from central Kathmandu, adjusted for the starting hotel and traffic.
Patan Museum and palace courtyards
Confirm the opening calendar and included galleries before buying admission. Give the displays two to three hours.
Café Swotha lunch
Walk the short distance only where comfortable and take a proper meal break.
A selected Patan neighbourhood walk
Ask a local guide to choose a manageable route. If the museum is closed, use the square and permitted lanes first and return to the museum another day; do not assume every temple interior opens.
Return or stay in Patan
Leave buffer for traffic. A reserved Bhojan Griha dinner in Dillibazar is optional later, after a rest and a separate transport plan.
Allow roughly 60–90 minutes from central Kathmandu, longer in disruption. Confirm road conditions and return pickup.
Bhaktapur’s western squares
Walk with a local guide from Durbar Square toward Taumadhi, respecting current monument access.
Mayur Restaurant lunch
Continue toward Dattatreya Square at a relaxed pace and reserve a courtyard meal at Peacock Guest House.
Dattatreya area and craft observation
Ask before entering workshops or taking portraits; purchases are optional. In heavy rain, shorten the route and keep lunch under cover.
Return with traffic buffer
Allow 60–90 minutes or more. If roads or official warnings make this excursion unsuitable, use an unvisited central site and Roadhouse Thamel lunch; do not add Kirtipur or a mountain flight to the return.
DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM
Four ways travelers exhaust Kathmandu.
Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.
Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.
Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.
Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
