THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Istanbul.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Sultanahmet without a palace marathon

Hippodrome → Blue Mosque → Hagia Sophia → Sirkeci

  1. Breakfast near your hotel

Allow a T1 transfer plus walking if staying across the Golden Horn.

  2. Hippodrome and Blue Mosque

Allow an hour; if prayer access interrupts, walk the precinct and return at a permitted time.

  3. Hagia Sophia gallery

Use the actual ticket conditions and allow up to two hours including security; check what any combined ticket includes.

  4. Meşhur Sultanahmet Köftecisi lunch

Confirm the Divanyolu branch and current service; a köfte meal near the square leaves a full hour before another interior. If closed, choose an open lokanta with displayed prices.

  5. Basilica Cistern, optional

Allow 60–90 minutes if an official session is confirmed. If access is unclear or queues are excessive, walk toward Gülhane instead.

  6. Sirkeci and Hafız Mustafa

Walk downhill about 20 minutes for a small dessert and tea, then rest.

  7. Dinner near your base

Keep the evening flexible after queues and mosque visits.

02
Day 2

Topkapı and the market slope

Topkapı → Gülhane → Eminönü → Süleymaniye

  1. Breakfast and palace approach

Allow a security buffer before the official opening.

  2. Topkapı Palace

Three to four hours; Tuesday is closed, so swap with the Kadıköy day. Confirm Harem and Hagia Irene inclusions.

  3. Pandeli lunch

Walk downhill through the Gülhane side toward Eminönü, allowing 30–40 minutes. Reserve and confirm service; use an open Sirkeci lokanta if unavailable.

  4. Spice Bazaar area and Hacı Bekir

A short browse and a small confectionery purchase; check trading schedules.

  5. Süleymaniye, if energy permits

Allow a 25–40-minute uphill walk or arrange suitable transport. Worship restrictions may mean exterior-only time.

  6. Hotel-side dinner

Leave the evening unbooked after the large palace visit.

03
Day 3

Bazaar to modern waterfront

Beyazıt → Grand Bazaar → Karaköy → Pera

  1. Breakfast before Beyazıt

Use T1 and allow the final walk. Check the bazaar’s trading day; on a closed day begin in Karaköy.

  2. Grand Bazaar

One to two hours focused on a craft or purchase; leave without buying if quality or price is unclear.

  3. Transfer to Karaköy

Allow 40–60 minutes for walking, T1 and crowds around the bridge.

  4. Karaköy Lokantası lunch

Reserve the lunch service or choose Karaköy Güllüoğlu for a lighter pastry-based stop and another nearby meal.

  5. Istanbul Modern

Allow two to three hours; Monday is closed. Swap with the ferry day or use the waterfront and a longer café stop.

  6. Rest before Beyoğlu

Use transport for the climb; do not force a long uphill walk after museum time.

  7. Hacı Abdullah or Mikla

Choose a traditional meal or a reserved tasting evening; confirm the exact service.

04
Day 4

Ferry and Asian-side food

European-side pier → Kadıköy market → Moda → return ferry

  1. Breakfast and pier transfer

Allow 30–45 minutes and check the actual departure board; do not confuse a Bosphorus tour with a Kadıköy crossing.

  2. Ferry to Kadıköy

Allow about an hour including waiting and disembarking; weather can change the route.

  3. Market streets

Walk slowly for an hour and save appetite for lunch.

  4. Çiya Sofrası

Choose several regional dishes, leaving 60–90 minutes rather than ordering a rushed takeaway.

  5. Moda walk and tea

Allow two hours including a café pause; shorten to the market if wet or windy.

  6. Return to your European-side pier

Allow up to 90 minutes door-to-door and use the latest timetable.

  7. Karaköy Lokantası or dinner near your base

Reserve if using the named restaurant; avoid a second tasting menu after the long lunch.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Istanbul.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
