THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Havana.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

TRAVEL STATUS · CHECK BEFORE BOOKING

Reviewed October 14, 2026: Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Cuba because of worsening shortages of fuel, electricity, food, water and medicine (updated October 5); the UK advises against all but essential travel. Review your own government's advice and insurance before booking. The routes below are conditional future planning, not a recommendation to travel now.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Conditional historic-core morning

Plaza de Armas → Cathedral → Old Square

  1. Host-confirmed water, weather and service check

Proceed only if travel is appropriate and today's supplies/transport are dependable; otherwise postpone this route.

  2. Guided Old Havana plazas

Take 2–3 hours with shade breaks; narrow the circuit for mobility or heat.

  3. Doña Eutimia lunch

Telephone first; otherwise use a host-confirmed open kitchen nearby, not another cross-city chase.

  4. Rest at your base

Allow water, cooling and a power-outage contingency; don't stack midday exposed monuments.

  5. City Museum only if confirmed

Otherwise take a short Plaza de Armas exterior walk; no promise of interior access.

  6. NAO Habana dinner

Reconfirm menu/payment and use trusted return transport before streets become isolated.

02
Day 2

Conditional art and Prado

Prado → Cuban Art building → Centro Habana

  1. Museum-opening check

Bellas Artes official and older schedules differ; verify that day and the Cuban Art building, rather than both buildings by default.

  2. Bellas Artes Cuban collection

Allow 2–3 hours if open. If closed, use a short guided Prado/Capitolio exterior route and hotel rest.

  3. Los Nardos lunch

Stay near Prado, confirm service and currency before ordering.

  4. Revolution Museum exterior

Short contextual walk only; gallery restoration and access were not verified.

  5. Hotel reset and arranged ride

Do not drift between Centro and Vedado after dark.

  6. La Guarida dinner

Book directly, disclose access requirements, and confirm a ride to the exact building.

03
Day 3

Conditional Vedado context

Colón cemetery → Plaza de la Revolución → Vedado

  1. Colón cemetery short circuit

Confirm visiting access; respect funerals, carry water, and use a guided limited route.

  2. Plaza de la Revolución

Allow 20–40 minutes by vehicle depending on origin/traffic, then a short exposed-square stop.

  3. El Atelier lunch if offered

Verify lunch specifically; if dinner-only on the date, take a host-confirmed nearby lunch and retain Atelier for the evening.

  4. Long rest

Humidity and infrastructure interruptions make this a substantive break.

  5. El Cocinero dinner

Arrange transport to the Almendares edge and back; ask about stair access.

  6. FAC only on a confirmed programme

Direct confirmation is required. Cancel the performance rather than treating an unknown calendar as guaranteed nightlife.

04
Day 4

Conditional western art, or a shorter core day

Jaimanitas → Miramar

  1. Confirm Fusterlandia and the driver

No western transfer without reliable access, fuel and a fixed return agreement.

  2. Fusterlandia

Allow 45–75 minutes driving each way depending on base and conditions; stay respectful of residents.

  3. Otramanera lunch only if confirmed

Arrange this Miramar service before leaving. Otherwise return to a confirmed central lunch at Jíbaro.

  4. Return and rest

Do not insert Old Havana museums into a western afternoon.

  5. Short safe Malecón walk

Only in calm weather and with a clearly arranged return; otherwise remain near your base.

  6. Jíbaro evening meal if based in the core

Reconfirm service and arrange a return. For a western base, retain a confirmed Otramanera dinner instead of crossing the city again.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Havana.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
