THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Geneva.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Old Geneva and the lake

Rue du Stand → Old Town → harbour

  1. Boréal Rue du Stand breakfast

Eat a real breakfast; allow 45 minutes, then 25–35 minutes uphill toward the old town.

  2. Old-town walk

Explore Bourg-de-Four and nearby lanes at a modest pace.

  3. St Pierre visit window

Check worship and tower access. Sunday service or closure: keep an exterior walk and return after lunch if useful; no fixed tower appointment is assumed.

  4. Chez ma Cousine lunch

Walk 10–15 minutes to Bourg-de-Four, allow a queue and a full meal. A long queue can be replaced by a confirmed Les Armures table nearby.

  5. Harbour and Jet d'Eau views

Allow 25–35 minutes downhill. Walk for 60–90 minutes, shorten in wind or rain and do not expect the fountain always to run.

  6. Seated pause and rest

A short local ferry ride is optional only if operating; no compulsory cruise follows the hill walk.

  7. Les Armures dinner

Reserve and allow 30–45 minutes back uphill from the shore; published holiday closures require another confirmed restaurant.

02
Day 2

Humanitarian Geneva and gardens

Pâquis → Red Cross Museum → Petit-Saconnex → gardens

  1. Buvette breakfast

Take 45–60 minutes, then allow 60–75 minutes for the journey to the museum during local roadworks.

  2. Red Cross Museum

Allow two to two and a half hours for the current displays. Monday: move this day, or make a garden-led morning without claiming museum entry.

  3. Café du Soleil lunch

Allow 30–45 minutes from the museum and reserve a full meal within Monday's lunch session if using the outdoor alternative.

  4. Botanic Garden or a booked UN replacement

Allow 35–45 minutes to the garden and a 60-minute main-path visit before winter closing. A confirmed UN tour replaces this block: choose a start no earlier than 15:30, finish lunch by 14:15, allow 45 minutes to the confirmation gate and arrive 30 minutes early. No suitable tour or poor garden weather means a café and rest.

  5. Return and rest

Allow 45–60 minutes to central lodging.

  6. Buvette dinner

Reserve fondue or confirm the actual meal offered; the warm-season evening daily plate is not promised in October. Bad weather/site closure: use Les Armures with a reservation.

03
Day 3

A focused CERN day

Central breakfast → Meyrin → central return

  1. Boréal Cornavin breakfast

Use the operator's Rue du Mont-Blanc 17 branch, open from 08:00 on weekends. Eat for 45 minutes before the tram journey.

  2. Travel to CERN

Allow 60–75 minutes including the final walk and registration; confirm the current service.

  3. Science Gateway exhibitions

Register for entry and spend about two hours. Monday: move this day; do not travel expecting an open exhibition.

  4. Big Bang Café lunch

A full burger or sandwich-and-salad meal fits the published lunch offer; allow an hour.

  5. One more exhibition or allocated activity

Allow up to two hours. A guided tour or workshop must have its own confirmed place and may replace this block; public visits do not include underground LHC access.

  6. Return and hotel rest

Allow 60–75 minutes to the centre and keep the late afternoon free.

  7. Chez ma Cousine dinner

Use the old-town branch's daily kitchen service; allow a queue without another reservation afterward.

04
Day 4

Carouge and watchmaking

Plainpalais → Carouge → Patek Philippe Museum

  1. Boréal Rue du Stand breakfast

Allow a full meal and 30–45 minutes by tram/walk toward Carouge.

  2. Carouge streets

Take a two-hour loop around the squares, with shops optional according to the weekday.

  3. Return toward Plainpalais

Allow 30–40 minutes to Rue des Bains.

  4. Chez ma Cousine Quartier des Bains lunch

Use the Rue des Bains 26 branch, whose operator lists daily kitchen from 11:00. Allow 75 minutes.

  5. Patek Philippe Museum

Allow 15–20 minutes to the entrance plus a short entry margin and two to two and a half hours inside. Monday/holiday closure: shift this day or keep Carouge and a longer café afternoon.

  6. Remor café pause

Walk 10–20 minutes for a drink or ice cream, without assuming hot meal service.

  7. Les Armures final dinner

Reserve and allow 30–40 minutes uphill after the café/rest interval. Departing earlier: eat before the journey and preserve the airport or station margin.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Geneva.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
