THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Florence.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Renaissance painting and the civic riverfront

Uffizi → Piazza della Signoria → Via dei Neri → Ponte Vecchio

  1. Uffizi check-in

Use your actual reserved slot and allow security time. This Saturday-first plan avoids Monday closure; October 14 requires the published afternoon strike schedule.

  2. All'Antico Vinaio lunch

Allow 10–20 minutes toward Via dei Neri. Keep the queue bounded and use a permitted eating area.

  3. Piazza della Signoria

Look at the civic setting, then take a seated rest rather than another major collection.

  4. Ponte Vecchio and river view

Cross slowly and look back from the riverbank; use an alternative bridge if crowding makes the crossing uncomfortable.

  5. La Giostra dinner

Reserve the Borgo Pinti venue and allow 25–35 minutes walking from the river. On a closed Uffizi day, use Museo Galileo in the morning instead.

Day 2

The cathedral district and David

Duomo → Via de' Ginori → Accademia → San Lorenzo

  1. Selected Duomo components

Sunday cathedral sightseeing is affected by worship, so prioritize your confirmed museum or dome booking and the exterior. Dome access requires 463 steps; the museum is the alternative.

  2. La Ménagère lunch

Allow 15–25 minutes north and book the appropriate bistro or restaurant format.

  3. Accademia

Use a reserved slot and allow security time. Monday closure means swapping with the science day; do not assume free-admission Sundays eliminate queues.

  4. San Lorenzo and market option

The upstairs food hall and ground market have different hours; choose a brief browse or an Arà snack if open.

  5. Zà Zà dinner

Reserve a seated meal. Trattoria Mario is a separate option only after its service is confirmed, not the default Sunday lunch.

Day 3

Science and the eastern neighborhoods

Museo Galileo → Sant'Ambrogio → Borgo Pinti

  1. Museo Galileo

A useful Monday anchor while Uffizi, Accademia and Pitti are normally closed. On Tuesday it closes at 13:00, so keep this a morning visit.

  2. Cibrèo Ristorante lunch

Allow 25–35 minutes to Sant'Ambrogio and confirm lunch service. If unavailable, book La Giostra's weekday lunch before 14:00 instead.

  3. Sant'Ambrogio streets

Browse a compact area without assuming market stalls remain open all afternoon. Rain calls for a café, not an extra museum dash.

  4. Hotel rest

Leave the late afternoon open for shopping or recovery.

  5. A simple San Lorenzo meal

Use Arà at the food hall if serving or a confirmed Zà Zà table; avoid another heavy dinner after a long lunch.

Day 4

Court life and the Oltrarno

Pitti Palace → Boboli option → Santo Spirito

  1. Pitti Palace

Choose two or three collection areas and check room closures. Monday requires swapping this day; leave a bag-check buffer.

  2. Palace café break

Confirm the on-site café is serving before relying on lunch; otherwise choose a clearly priced nearby café and return only if the ticket permits re-entry.

  3. Selective Boboli route

Only if open and weather is suitable. The first and last Mondays normally close, and the October 7–8 weather alert may extend. Sloping gravel routes require an access plan.

  4. Santo Spirito neighborhood

Allow 15–25 minutes from the palace area and keep workshop visits respectful. Closed gardens mean a longer seated break and shorter street walk.

  5. Il Santo Bevitore dinner

Reserve the restaurant at Via di Santo Spirito and stay on this side of the river for the evening.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Florence.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
