THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Fez.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

A guided introduction to the medina

Bab Bou Jeloud → Bou Inania → Talaa Kebira → Nejjarine

  1. Breakfast at your riad

Eat before the guided walk and agree a gate meeting point.

  2. Bab Bou Jeloud and Bou Inania

Saturday-start example. Allow 90 minutes for introductions and the madrasa if open; if religious use limits entry, keep the exterior and continue.

  3. Talaa Kebira with your guide

Take a slow downhill route with craft stops, avoiding obligatory shop visits.

  4. Café Clock lunch

Return to the upper-lane café before committing to the lower-medina afternoon; allow 75 minutes.

  5. Nejjarine and Al Qarawiyyin surroundings

Allow three hours including a 30–45-minute approach, museum if open, permitted exterior views and the return uphill. Shorten the route for heat or mobility needs.

  6. Dar Roumana dinner

Rest first. Reserve dinner and organize the porter meeting; do not navigate an unfamiliar deep-medina route unaided after dark.

02
Day 2

Eastern-medina crafts

Chouara → Palais Amani → Ain Nokbi

  1. Riad breakfast

Meet your guide after breakfast and confirm the day's vehicle pickups.

  2. Chouara terrace and nearby trades

Agree the terrace terms first; allow two hours for the approach and surrounding lanes, with a shorter alternative for odors or stairs.

  3. Eden lunch at Palais Amani

Book Sunday lunch and allow 30–45 minutes from the tannery area including navigation. If unavailable, prearrange Café Clock and omit the workshop to protect the slower cross-medina return.

  4. Vehicle transfer to Art Naji

Allow 45–60 minutes including walking to the pickup point. Visit only with a confirmed demonstration; shopping is optional.

  5. Return and rest

Allow up to an hour including the final riad approach.

  6. Gayza dinner

Reserve service and a porter route; a riad meal arranged that morning is the simpler fallback.

Day 3

Fes el Jdid and the reopened Batha museum

Royal Palace gates → Mellah → Batha

  1. Breakfast before pickup

Arrange a guide and vehicle rather than walking an unfamiliar connecting road.

  2. Royal Palace exterior and Mellah

Allow two hours; interior religious heritage visits require separate confirmation and are not assumed.

  3. Transfer toward Batha

Allow 30–45 minutes including gate approaches.

  4. Fez Café lunch

Reserve Monday lunch; Café Clock is a daily-service fallback if the garden restaurant is unavailable.

  5. Al Batha Museum of Islamic Arts

Allow two hours. Its published Tuesday closure means this Monday placement matters; swap days if your stay starts differently.

  6. L'Amandier dinner

Book ahead and use the hotel's recommended vehicle approach and final entrance.

Day 4

Cooking and a slower return to familiar lanes

Talaa Kebira → riad → Riad Idrissy

  1. Light breakfast

Keep room for the cooking-class meal.

  2. Reach Café Clock

This is an arrival buffer, not a promised class start; follow the confirmed booking and allow up to five hours for the class and meal.

    Check current official details ↗
  3. Rest or purposeful craft shopping

Begin after the actual class and meal end; do not rush a later-starting session. Return only to shops you chose independently. If no class is available, have Café Clock lunch and keep this a relaxed medina day; Al Batha is closed Tuesday.

  4. The Ruined Garden supper

Reserve an early table within the operator's published afternoon/evening service and organize the return to your riad.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Fez.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
