Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.
ROUTING LOGIC
Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.
01
Day 1
Old Delhi with a clear walking limit
Red Fort → Jama Masjid → lunch → Chandni Chowk
Red Fort
Confirm actual opening and security access for the date. Allow 2–3 hours; if entry is suspended, start with a guide-led street loop and spend longer at the available religious sites.
Jama Masjid exterior and permitted visit
Allow about 20–30 minutes from the fort area; prayer restrictions take priority. If visitors cannot enter, move directly to lunch and return only if access resumes.
Karim’s lunch
Use the Gali Kababian location. A reserved Lakhori lunch is the seated alternative, with a short lane walk rather than a vehicle detour.
Chandni Chowk and Sis Ganj
Choose a 60–90-minute guided loop, allowing 15–25 minutes between mosque-area lanes and the gurdwara. Cover your head and follow worship guidance.
Saravanaa Bhavan dinner
After a hotel break, use the Janpath branch. Allow 30–60 minutes from Old Delhi to the central area by Metro with walking or vehicle, rather than treating the districts as adjacent.
02
Day 2
A compact heritage precinct
Humayun’s Tomb → site museum → Lodhi Road → Sunder Nursery
Humayun’s Tomb
Use the cooler morning for the gardens and permitted tomb access.
Humayun’s Tomb World Heritage Site Museum
Walk to the separate museum entrance and allow 90 minutes. Monday or national-holiday closure: use a short Sunder Nursery walk now instead.
Indian Accent lunch
Reserve the actual lunch service at The Lodhi and allow roughly 10–20 minutes by vehicle from the precinct. For a simpler meal, arrange a central Saravanaa Bhavan visit and omit the later return rather than rushing.
Sunder Nursery or rest
Return in roughly 10–20 minutes if you want more outdoor time. On the museum-closure version, skip this repeat park visit and rest. In poor air or heat, keep the afternoon indoors.
A light evening near your hotel
Lunch is already the named substantial meal; avoid forcing another tasting dinner. If you chose a lighter lunch, reserve United Coffee House in Connaught Place, allowing 30–60 minutes from Lodhi Road.
03
Day 3
Southern archaeology without a citywide checklist
Qutub complex → Mehrauli lunch → Lodhi Garden or hotel
Qutub Minar complex
Allow 45–75 minutes from central Delhi by vehicle or Metro plus last-mile ride. Spend about two hours in the complex; the minaret is not a climb.
Olive Qutub lunch
Allow roughly 10–20 minutes from the visitor exit, depending on transport and lane access. Reserve after its 12:30 opening; do not count on an earlier table.
Lodhi Garden or hotel recovery
If air and weather suit, allow 35–60 minutes toward Lodhi Garden for a short loop. Otherwise return to the hotel; no additional monument is required.
Bukhara dinner
Reserve at ITC Maurya and allow roughly 30–60 minutes from the Lodhi area, longer from elsewhere. Check child restrictions; United Coffee House is a simpler alternative.
04
Day 4
Craft, civic spaces and central dining
Crafts Museum → Café Lota → India Gate → Connaught Place
National Crafts Museum
Confirm gallery and demonstration opening separately from office hours. If galleries are unavailable, use a short India Gate exterior visit and a relaxed café morning instead.
Café Lota lunch
Use Gate 2 and allow time for service; its operator lists daily opening even when a museum section is closed.
India Gate exterior
Allow 15–30 minutes by vehicle, or a longer walk only in suitable conditions. Follow current security cordons; this is a public-space visit, not promised access to adjacent government buildings.
Connaught Place
Allow roughly 20–40 minutes to the central shopping arcades; choose a short loop and a seated break.
United Coffee House dinner
Reserve the original restaurant and use the evening for a relaxed meal. If traveling onward, leave a terminal-specific airport buffer instead of adding another district.
DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM
Four ways travelers exhaust Delhi.
Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.
Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.
Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.
Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
