THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Chennai.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Mylapore, Santhome and the early waterfront

Mylapore hotel → temple streets → Santhome → Marina edge → Alwarpet dinner

  1. Mylapore temple district

Walk the tank streets and visit only areas open to visitors. If a major service or festival blocks access, keep to the exterior and market streets.

  2. Murugan Idli breakfast

Allow 30–45 minutes by car to the confirmed T Nagar branch and about 60 minutes to eat. A nearby hotel breakfast is the low-transfer fallback.

  3. Hotel rest

Return by 11:15 and protect the hottest hours for rest rather than adding a museum across town.

  4. Ratna Cafe lunch

Allow 30–60 minutes to the confirmed Triplicane branch and one hour for a full tiffin meal before Santhome.

  5. San Thome Basilica

Allow 20–40 minutes from Mylapore and 45–60 minutes on site. During a service, keep the visit to the exterior and return another time.

  6. Marina promenade section

Use a car to a defined section, walk 30–45 minutes and follow police or lifeguard limits; this is not a swim.

  7. Southern Spice dinner

Allow 30–60 minutes to Nungambakkam and reserve the sitting. Buhari on Anna Salai is the simpler fallback.

02
Day 2

Egmore collections and the northern colonial core

Egmore → Fort St George → Triplicane → hotel

  1. Hotel breakfast and calendar check

Verify the Government Museum buildings and Fort museum before leaving; if either is closed, substitute a focused neighborhood walk rather than inventing access.

  2. Government Museum Chennai

Spend about 2.5 hours on bronzes, archaeology and one additional open collection. Ask staff which buildings are operating.

  3. Ratna Cafe lunch

Allow 25–45 minutes to Triplicane and 60 minutes for tiffin; use a hotel lunch if traffic or branch status is uncertain.

  4. Hotel rest or Fort transfer

If Fort museum admission is confirmed, allow 30–60 minutes plus security. Otherwise return for a two-hour rest.

  5. Fort St George precinct

Use the designated visitor route for up to two hours. Do not photograph restricted areas; if entry fails, take a short public George Town orientation with a guide.

  6. Return and cool down

Allow 45–75 minutes to the central hotel in peak traffic.

  7. Buhari Mount Road dinner

Confirm the exact branch and order a full meal; Southern Spice is the reserved premium alternative.

03
Day 3

The southern arts corridor

Central hotel → Cholamandal → DakshinaChitra → Besant Nagar

  1. Madras Pavilion breakfast

Use the confirmed breakfast session and depart by 09:00. If staying north, eat at the hotel to avoid a preliminary cross-city trip.

  2. Drive to Cholamandal

Allow 60–90 minutes depending on origin and traffic. Confirm gallery access before departure.

  3. Cholamandal Artists’ Village

Spend 90 minutes on open galleries and grounds; respect studio privacy.

  4. Drive to DakshinaChitra

Allow 30–45 minutes on East Coast Road and arrive only on a confirmed non-Tuesday opening day.

  5. DakshinaChitra lunch and museum

Use the on-site food option because outside food is restricted, then allow 2.5–3 hours for houses, galleries and demonstrations.

  6. Return toward Besant Nagar

Allow 60–90 minutes; in severe rain return directly to the hotel.

  7. The Marina dinner

Reserve in Nungambakkam only if the cross-city return remains reasonable; otherwise choose a confirmed Besant Nagar restaurant near the hotel.

04
Day 4

Mamallapuram as a real excursion

Chennai → Mamallapuram monument group → Chennai

  1. Early hotel breakfast

Use a confirmed early service or packed breakfast and meet the licensed driver by 07:15.

  2. Drive to Mamallapuram

Allow 90–150 minutes each way depending on origin and traffic; carry water and sun protection.

  3. Shore Temple and monument circuit

Use a licensed guide and confirmed ASI ticket. Spend the morning on a limited set of monuments with shade and seated breaks.

  4. Reserved local lunch

Ask the driver or hotel to reserve a reputable full meal; confirm seafood species and price before ordering.

  5. Second monument block or rest

Choose one short rock-cut group. In extreme heat, rest indoors and depart early rather than forcing the full list.

  6. Return to Chennai

Allow 2–3 hours with traffic and a comfort stop.

  7. Light hotel dinner

Keep the evening flexible after the road journey; do not add a cross-city performance unless its timing and transfer are certain.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Chennai.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
