THE ROUTE VERDICT

Realistic itineraries
in Cairo.

Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

The Giza landscape

Giza Plateau → Khufu’s → Giza hotel area

  1. Giza Plateau

Allow three to four hours including the Sphinx. Confirm the opening time and interior add-ons; skip confined passages if unsuitable.

  2. Lunch at Khufu’s

Use your confirmed lunch slot. Khufu’s directs entry through Fayoum Gate visitor centre with a plateau ticket and onward shuttle. If unavailable, transfer to 139 Pavilion with a reservation.

  3. Rest in Giza

Allow 30–60 minutes for getting out of the site and to your hotel; severe heat is a reason to shorten the exposed morning.

  4. The Moghul Room dinner

Book the evening meal at Mena House. A Downtown-based traveler should leave a generous road buffer and may instead eat at Felfela after returning.

02
Day 2

A substantial museum day

Grand Egyptian Museum → Mena House → Zamalek

  1. GEM entry window

Reserve through the official ticket site. Choose main galleries, Tutankhamun and the boat display according to stamina; allow four to five hours.

  2. 139 Pavilion lunch

Allow roughly 30–60 minutes for a car transfer and entry formalities. If running late, eat within GEM first and omit this detour.

  3. Return and recharge

Allow 45–90 minutes or more to Zamalek depending on traffic. Do not add Saqqara to the afternoon.

  4. Pier 88 Nile River

A reserved dinner is the only fixed evening commitment. If the museum is unavailable, move this entire day and use the Downtown museum day instead.

03
Day 3

Civilizations and Old Cairo

NMEC → Coptic Museum → Downtown

  1. NMEC

Spend around two hours with the main narrative and Royal Mummies Hall, respecting gallery rules.

  2. Transfer to Old Cairo

Allow 20–40 minutes by car, then visit the Coptic Museum for around 90 minutes. Ask staff for an accessible route if required.

  3. Felfela lunch

Transfer downtown with a 30–60 minute allowance. If either museum has special restrictions, visit the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir this morning instead.

  4. Café Riche and a short Downtown walk

Use the café for a drink and stop before fatigue turns major-road crossings into a problem. The Tahrir museum deserves a separate two-hour block, not a last-minute dash.

04
Day 4

Citadel and historic streets

Citadel → Al-Muizz → Khan el-Khalili → Downtown

  1. Citadel visit

Check that day’s opening and spend about two hours. Use NMEC or the Tahrir museum instead if exposed walking is unsuitable.

  2. Transfer to Al-Muizz

Allow 30–45 minutes by car, then walk a focused route through selected ticketed monuments; dress respectfully for religious buildings.

  3. El Fishawy tea break

Walk into Khan el-Khalili for a drink and optional browsing. This is a pause, not the full meal.

  4. Felfela late lunch

Allow 30–60 minutes back Downtown and make this the substantial meal. If streets are too crowded, omit the bazaar and head to lunch earlier.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Cairo.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
