Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.
ROUTING LOGIC
Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.
01
Day 1
Parliament and central Pest
Kossuth Square → Vécsey Street → Danube → Basilica → Vörösmarty Square
Parliament appointment
Allow an early security margin and roughly 90 minutes overall. If no tour is available, walk Kossuth Square and the exterior without buying an unverified substitute.
Retró Lángos lunch
Walk 10–15 minutes to Vécsey Street and allow an hour to order and eat. Check the branch before departing.
Shoes memorial and river walk
Return toward the river in 15 minutes, pause respectfully and continue toward the Chain Bridge area. Use upper streets if the embankment is restricted.
St Stephen’s Basilica
Allow 20 minutes from the riverside and about an hour for the selected admission. A service closure means exterior square time and a later visit.
Gerbeaud cake stop
Walk 15–20 minutes to Vörösmarty Square. End with a short central walk and leave dinner flexible rather than adding a cross-river tour.
02
Day 2
Buda’s upper streets and an optional bath
Castle District → Attila Road → Buda riverfront → Rudas
Bus to Castle Hill
Allow 40–50 minutes from central Pest including waiting. Walk the lanes and Fisherman’s Bastion viewpoints before the busiest groups.
Matthias Church
Use the current visitor schedule and allow an hour. Tower access is a separate decision; skip it when stairs or availability make it unsuitable.
Stand25 lunch
Descend toward Attila Road, allowing 25–35 minutes via open streets or a bus. Reserve lunch; if that service is unavailable, plan an earlier central meal before the hill visit and book Stand25 dinner.
Lower Buda riverside
Allow 30 minutes to reach the river and continue south by tram or on foot. This also works as the afternoon for non-bathers.
Rudas, only with a suitable session
Allow up to three hours including changing. Check gender schedule, age and mobility restrictions; otherwise cross a public bridge back to Pest for a café break. Do not substitute closed Gellért.
03
Day 3
City Park and Andrássy Avenue
Széchenyi → City Park → Heroes’ Square → Liszt Ferenc Square
Széchenyi bath or park morning
Take M1 with a 40-minute door-to-door allowance from the centre. Bathers aged 14+ can spend three hours; non-bathers use the park and exterior architecture instead.
City Park walk
Allow time to change, drink water and walk toward Heroes’ Square. Shorten this exposed outdoor portion in heat or rain.
Late lunch at Menza
Take M1 toward Oktogon and walk to Liszt Ferenc Square, allowing 30–40 minutes. Reserve a table rather than arriving hungry without a plan.
Andrássy Avenue at an easy pace
Walk a chosen section toward the centre, with shops and cafés as optional stops. Keep the evening free; Rosenstein can be a separately reserved dinner with a 30–40-minute transfer allowance.
04
Day 4
Market food and Jewish heritage
Great Market Hall → Károlyi Street → Dohány Street → Wesselényi Street
Great Market Hall
Browse produce for an hour on a weekday morning. On Sunday start after the later opening; on a public holiday use Central Grand Café and move the market visit.
Central coffee stop
Walk 15 minutes to Károlyi Street for coffee and a light cake; keep it small if lunch follows.
Belvárosi Disznótoros lunch
Use the Károlyi Street counter nearby for a meal with pickles and sides. Confirm branch hours and inspect portion prices. The Károlyi counter lists Monday–Saturday service; on Sunday use Central for the full lunch instead.
Dohány Street Synagogue
Walk 15–20 minutes and leave a security margin. Allow two hours; on Saturday or a religious closure, swap this day with Day 3 or take a public-street neighborhood walk.
Gettó Gulyás dinner
The restaurant is a short walk into the quarter. Reserve, use the afternoon gap for rest, and treat any later bar visit as optional.
DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM
Four ways travelers exhaust Budapest.
Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.
Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.
Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.
Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
