Days that respect geography, energy, opening hours, crowd pressure, and the pleasure of not rushing.
ROUTING LOGIC
Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.
01
Day 1
The palace and the northern lakes
Meridian Gate → Forbidden City → Jingshan → Shichahai
Palace Museum booked entry
Use the confirmed arrival window and original passport. Allow security time and approach from the south; you do not need to route through Tiananmen Square if that creates a separate reservation issue.
Lunch break and north exit
Use an open museum refreshment outlet or bring a permitted simple snack; do not leave lunch until after a long hill climb. Exit north if continuing to Jingshan.
Jingshan Park
Allow 10–20 minutes for the street crossing and entrance approach, then an optional stepped climb. Lower paths are the alternative for tired or mobility-limited visitors.
Shichahai and Huguosi
Allow 30–45 minutes by a mix of local travel and walking toward the lakes; continue to Huguosi Snacks and Fuhuazhai for small tastings.
Shaguoju dinner
Allow 20–35 minutes onward to Gangwashi and reserve a seated meal. If palace tickets are unavailable or Monday closure applies, use Beihai’s open park areas and Jingshan, checking internal courtyard closures.
02
Day 2
Ceremonial south and a duck dinner
Temple of Heaven → Qianmen → Zhushikou
Temple of Heaven
Use a ticket covering the inner monuments and check their Monday closure. Allow 2½–3 hours including park walking.
Qianmen lunch and streets
Allow 25–40 minutes by transit or taxi and walking. Quanjude can be the main midday duck meal if you prefer an earlier sitting.
Dashilan and southern lanes
Keep the walk compact and respect residential entrances; use a seated break during summer heat.
Quanjude or Fengzeyuan
Reserve Qianmen Quanjude if you did not eat duck at lunch; choose Fengzeyuan in Zhushikou for Shandong dishes instead. Monday: swap the morning with an open garden day if the inner Temple of Heaven sites are essential.
03
Day 3
A northwest garden day
Summer Palace → Xisi
Travel to the Summer Palace
Allow 60–90 minutes from the central hotel district by Metro and entrance walking. Choose the gate before traveling.
Lake and selected architecture
Plan one manageable shore circuit; omit steep hills and boats if conditions or access do not suit.
A proper rest
Use an open park food outlet or a prearranged packed lunch, then decide whether another hour of gardens adds value. Verify internal scenic-area closures rather than assuming the gate ticket opens every building.
Xisi return
Allow 60–90 minutes back by rail and walking. Huatian Yanji offers a named casual cold-noodle meal; Shaguoju is a seated alternative if not used on Day 1.
Hotel or a short nearby walk
Keep the evening light before the wall day. In severe weather, replace the garden with a confirmed National Museum reservation on an open day, not an unreserved walk-up.
04
Day 4
Mutianyu without a second major monument
Central Beijing → Mutianyu → city
Prearranged return transport
Allow roughly 1½–2½ hours each way, longer in heavy traffic. Confirm pickup, return point and which admission and lift products are included.
Mutianyu Great Wall
Use the lift system you booked, then choose a conservative wall section with time to return. Cable assistance does not remove all steps.
Yisonglou lunch
Confirm this operator-listed restaurant before departure; if service is unavailable, arrange a packed lunch through your hotel rather than relying on an unnamed tour stop.
Return to Beijing
Leave a traffic buffer and keep the evening free of timed museum tickets. A Niujie Jubaoyuan dinner is possible only if the return time and queue suit.
Beihai or a confirmed museum visit
If the wall closes or travel is unsafe, remain in the city, use current official notices and move the excursion. Do not substitute an unofficial wild-wall hike.
DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM
Four ways travelers exhaust Beijing.
Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.
Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.
Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.
Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
