TRAVEL STATUS · CHECK BEFORE BOOKING

Reviewed October 14, 2026: U.S. Ethiopia advisory issued August 27, 2026 is Level 3, Reconsider travel. FCDO updated October 7, 2026 with severe regional restrictions; its page reports civilian Tigray flights suspended since September 22. This city outline does not endorse travel beyond Addis Ababa. Recheck both advisories before committing.

ROUTING LOGIC

Times are suggested planning windows, including the travel buffers described below. Reorder whole days for museum closures, weather, and confirmed reservations. For a shorter visit, use the first day or first two days; extensions and alternatives are labeled.

01
Day 1

Arat Kilo and Piazza

Bole base → National Museum → cathedral → Piazza → base

  1. Check advice, opening and accessibility

U.S. Ethiopia advice is Level 3, Reconsider travel. Keep this outline within Addis Ababa; do not infer that regional roads are safe. Check today's advice, access and driver arrangements; abandon the route during unrest or restrictions. Allow altitude recovery and arrange return before dark. Reconfirm the named venue, route and return with your accommodation. If security instructions require shelter or avoiding movement, cancel the whole route; an indoor museum is not an alternative to a shelter order. Confirm step-free entrances, working lifts, toilets and vehicle assistance directly; shorten the day rather than improvising inaccessible connections.

  2. National Museum

Allow 1½–2 hours; verify displayed galleries and accessible entry. Do not promise original Lucy fossils.

    Check current official details ↗
  3. Holy Trinity Cathedral

A 10–20 minute local driver transfer; only visit admitted areas outside services.

  4. Lunch at Castelli's

Allow a 20–40 minute drive to Piazza; reconfirm lunch service before leaving the cathedral.

  5. Tomoca Coffee

Use the confirmed Piazza outlet for a short stop; construction may alter the walking connection.

  6. Return to hotel

Keep 45–75 minutes for the drive and rest. Eat an early dinner at your lodging; cancel Piazza if the route is disrupted.

02
Day 2

Campus culture and palace

Base → Sidist Kilo → central Hilton → Unity Park → base

  2. Ethnological Museum

Allow 1½ hours after university access confirmation; if campus entry is unavailable, extend a confirmed museum rather than cross checkpoints.

  3. Transfer to central hotel cluster

    Plan 30–60 minutes, not a five-minute map-distance connection.

  4. Lunch at Gazebo, Hilton Addis

Confirm public restaurant service and allow an hour.

  5. Unity Park

Only after an admission package and entry time are confirmed; spend up to 2½ hours on an accessible subset.

  6. Return and early dinner

Avoid a late drive. Table 5 is an option only if it lies near your actual base and service is reconfirmed; otherwise dine at the hotel.

03
Day 3

Entoto as a separate hillside half-day

Base → Entoto entrance → local meal → Bole → base

  2. Driver to Entoto

Allow 45–75 minutes each way, extra in traffic; skip if altitude fatigue, rain or restrictions make it unsuitable.

  3. Park route and optional Maryam Church

Choose a modest two-hour route; Maryam Church is an alternative to part of the park route, not an extra two-hour stop. Church access is separate and worship comes first. Confirm vehicle-assisted options before relying on them.

  4. Lunch at an open park café

Carry a snack and water if café operations cannot be confirmed; a downtown restaurant is not part of this hillside lunch.

  5. Return toward Bole

Keep the afternoon flexible and allow rest after the higher elevation.

  6. Early dinner at Yod Abyssinia

Confirm food service at the Bole branch; omit any late show if its return conflicts with current advice. The Kitchen is a closer alternative for a Meskel Square base.

04
Day 4

Mekanisa and central contemporary culture

Base → Zoma → central cluster → memorial or performance information → base

  2. Zoma Museum

Travel only after the operator confirms public hours; allow 1½–2 hours. If unconfirmed, use a verified central museum and keep the day shorter.

  3. Transfer back to central district

Allow 45–90 minutes from Mekanisa; do not add Merkato to this cross-city day.

  4. Lunch at The Kitchen

Use the Hyatt beside Meskel Square if service is confirmed.

  5. Red Terror memorial museum

Spend 60–90 minutes if open and emotionally appropriate; alternatively use a quiet coffee break.

  6. Return and early dinner

Adey Pizza or Table 5 suits a Kazanchis base if confirmed. Fendika@Hyatt is an optional separately confirmed program, not a nightly guarantee or permission for unsafe night movement.

DO NOT BREAK THE RHYTHM

Four ways travelers exhaust Addis Ababa.

Crossing town for every mealA good nearby table beats the famous reservation that breaks the day.

Stacking major institutionsTwo famous doors do not guarantee two meaningful visits.

Ignoring the hotel resetA real break protects the evening that mattered enough to reserve.

Treating travel time as emptyThe route, street, train, river, or view can be part of the city—not an inconvenience.
