ATLAS MASTER DESTINATION

Siem ReapCambodia

Siem Reap works best as a comfortable base for concentrated temple mornings and unhurried Cambodian meals. Angkor is an extensive archaeological landscape, not one monument with one opening time; a reliable driver and fewer stops make a substantial difference.

THE ATLAS VERDICT

Three temple mornings beat four days of temple collecting.

Day 1 stands alone with Angkor Wat and Bayon. Day 2 adds Ta Prohm and Preah Khan, Day 3 stays in town, and Day 4 reaches Banteay Srei. That uses three temple-entry days within the official three-day pass window.

WHO WILL LOVE IT

Architecture, sculpture and patient looking.

The differences between a carved gallery, a forested monastery and a compact sandstone sanctuary are the reward. A knowledgeable licensed guide can explain those differences far better than a rapid sequence of photographs.

WHO SHOULD THINK TWICE

Visitors who need level surfaces or cool outdoor days.

Long approaches, broken stone, steep stairs and humidity demand energy. Upper levels are optional, and some remain unsuitable even with assistance. Choose a hotel with useful midday rest facilities and discuss a realistic access route before paying for transport.

THE ONE RULE

Budget temple days, driving and recovery separately.

Days 1–2 make a weekend; Days 3–4 extend it. The four-day route uses the pass on Days 1, 2 and 4, not four consecutive temple days. Timings and relative cost bands are estimates, with paid temple admission distinct from a guide or driver.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The details that save a day.

Arrival

SAI is the new, distant airport

Use Siem Reap Angkor International Airport transport information, not old airport advice. Allow roughly 60–90 minutes to a central hotel, plus waiting; verify the current shuttle stop or reserve a named pickup.

Verify current guidance ↗
Passes

Count entry days correctly

Official terms list a three-day Angkor pass usable within seven days and a seven-day pass within thirty. This route uses three temple days. Three- and seven-day passes require a face photo; keep the named pass available for checks.

Verify current guidance ↗
Transport

Agree the actual temple route

Arrange a licensed guide if you want interpretation and a driver separately where needed. Confirm gates, pickup times, water, weather cover and whether Banteay Srei is included; a town tuk-tuk quote is not automatically a full excursion.

Verify current guidance ↗
Access

Upper towers are optional

Cover shoulders and knees. Bakan excludes under-12s and has steep stairs; the June 2026 notice closes it after 13:00 on the 14th and 28th monthly. General park opening does not grant early entry to every temple or level.

Verify current guidance ↗
Weather

Plan for heat and wet stone

Hot months call for shorter mornings and midday recovery. Rain can make stone slippery and affect country roads; ask the driver about conditions before the Banteay Srei excursion. Keep the museum as an indoor substitute.

Verify current guidance ↗
Safety

Stay on approved routes

Respect barriers, conservation work and worship. Do not climb on masonry for photographs, approach wildlife or accept a shortcut beyond marked visitor paths; arrange a clear return pickup.

Verify current guidance ↗
Accessibility

Discuss surfaces, not just transport

A car reduces heat and distance but does not remove stone steps or long approaches. Ask for precise entrance, toilet and step-free details; lower galleries and shorter return routes are valid visits.

Verify current guidance ↗
Reservations

Reserve the evening, keep midday flexible

Book Phare by performance date and seating section. Reserve tasting dinners and declare allergies in advance; Cuisine Wat Damnak has an under-12 restriction. Leave enough transfer time after temple days.

Verify current guidance ↗
Payments

Clarify currency and service charges

Ask which currency a quote uses and inspect the bill before adding a discretionary tip. Carry small denominations for drivers and small purchases; agree transport prices before departure rather than negotiating at the last temple.

Verify current guidance ↗
Mistakes

Do not turn a pass into a checklist

A three-day pass need not mean three exhausting full days. The museum and circus are separate businesses, and the town workshop is not the silk farm. Confirm each product’s own terms.
